1. we cant know who deserves to play based on merit if those players don't play. if you look at production per/90....many productive players havent stuck in MLS especially recently....which doesnt seem to indicate that playing time is actually merit-based in MLS. 2. it used to happen all the time.....sanneh, mathis, mcbride, eddie lewis, rico clark, ben olsen, robin fraser, jason kreis, clint dempsey etc etc...it used to happen all the time!! now? not so much.
Weren't all of those players high draft picks? Which would mean that they were in fact heralded players. Your argument is weak here.
thats not fair. a lot of times subs come on to kill olut games and get no chances to score too..... i think per/90 basis is fine...especially if that player hasnt ever been given an extended amount of starts to prove otherwise!! yeah maybe jason johnson has improved in USL...despite a good per/90 production rate in MLS when he was in it....let's see what MLS team signs him then if USL is really a good place to improve. seems he should get another shot now right? but watch if he does make it back to MLS...how much of a chance he actually gets..... mataritta has been injured thats why he wasnt playing...viera/reyna obviously hate american players. it's obvious.
first off being a high draft pick does not being heralded....it means nothing actually until you establish yourswlf as a pro. second, no a lot of these players were NOT high draft picks actually! the ones that were - like dempsey - got 23 out of 24 starts their first MLS seasons...and an ACTUAL CHANCE TO PLAY!!! whereas the jonathan lewis of MLS these days get drafted high but never get on the field....big difference and the WHOLE POINT OF THE THREAD.
You do realize that NYCFC is one of the best teams in MLS right? Playing time will be difficult for a lot of players to earn. Playing time is not just earned by one's performance during games. It's also how the player performs everyday on the training field. It's same in MLS as it is in any league in the world. Also dominating one's age group does not mean that a player will be a good at the senior level. A good portion of U20, U17 stars don't live up to those expectations at the higher levels.
mataritta vs. sweat doesnt prove anything. how about lewis, mcnamara, mixx, poku, shelton mullins etc etc.....? NYCFC has been a graveyard for american players so far in MLS history.
you are willfully arguing me b/c u think I hate MLS and you want to defend MLS. whatever i say you will argue. the opportunity for draft picks and unproven players in MLS is worse than it used to be by an measure. a lot of draft picks/unhyped players used to break through in MLS every year....now, less do.
Marcus Epps, Jack Elliot, Corey Burke, Richie Marquez, Bronico, Valot, Mueller, Gressell, Mo Adams, etc
MLS can roster players without playing them....if MLS wants to play any player they can....it's up to them how they set up the rules in MLS.
who? i said to the USMNT... these players are all fringe players and no where near any of their national teams any way.....how many of these guys are lock starters on any team in MLS??
In other words, "Yes, I admit I was wrong" And you're suggesting that a MLS team skirt the rules by wasting roster spots at the same time you're mad that teams are wasting roster spots by not playing players...
How about Pirlo being benched for Mikey Lopez? Lopez was even more unheralded, and was starting ahead of both Pirlo and McNamara last year. Mix Diskerud was starting every game at first, and he got benched because he was awful. If anything, that proves expensive players can be benched. Poku? First of all, he's not American. Second, he was getting regular minutes, and left because Miami FC offered him a ridiculously high salary. The only time "a lot" of unheralded players broke through in MLS every year was the 1990s, when the league was brand-new and most of the teams had almost nonexistent scouting budgets. After 2000, the only unheralded rookies I've seen eventually get caps are Kerry Zavagnin, Brian Ching, Bobby Boswell, Jeff Parke, and Chris Wondolowski. Of those, only Ching and Wondo got regular USMNT call-ups for any length of time. None ever became a regular starter for the USMNT.
That would be a surprise to the government and the league's lawyers I'm sure. Can we also declare things like safe working conditions, minimum wage for the ticket reps, and family leave policy irrelevant?
but what happeend to lopez? is he even in MLS? mis was a scapegoat for pirlo not being good enough for MLS....just like allo of micahel bradley's cm mates have been for usmnt. poku couldve played for america...but picked ghana....and got sold to russia. draft picks used to make the USMNT....now they dont. dempsey is a prefect example...no one thought he would be what he was...but he started every game his rookie season and the rest is history. now, draft picks never play. and never become dempsey....or even international players b/c by the time they get on the field it is too late.
yes all of those things are irrelevant when considering MLS ROSTER RULES...and foreign player limits in MLS. ARE YOU DENSE??? if MLS can set a limit of 8 intl slots per team... then they can also make the limit 7.....which is the only thing i have suggested here. you think you are trolling me but you are just making yourself look bad.
No, you explicitly said in the other thread that MLS teams could sign whatever players they want so saying they would only sign players eligible for the U.S. Nats would be legal, when it clearly is not. That's what I'm talking about. I can go quote the [posts if you need a reminder. Once you admit you're wrong about that we can move on.
So it's basically been proven that A) Americans don't seem to have a tremendous impediment to playing time; B) the managers that are supposedly forcing red blooded Americans to languish behind highly paid foreigners don't actually seem to exist. Do we really need to continue engaging Facebook uncle of soccer takes here? It's clearly not making any difference.
Dempsey, unheralded? You do realize Dempsey was a Project-40 player? Those were the top prospects in that era -- it was the predecessor to Generation Adidas. It was a surprise that he dropped to 8th in the draft.
Do you honestly not think that the coaches don't see who is playing the best literally every day in practice? Do you think you have more insight than they do... from... a message board?
Also I'd like to point out the logical inconsistency you've created between the other thread you started where we should not have guaranteed roster spots on the national team and guaranteeing roster spots for Americans in the MLS for the USMNT here.
