Spanish daily Marca reports the Los Angeles Galaxy are interested in former Valencia center back Ivan Helguera. Link:http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/soccer/01/02/galaxy.helguera/
Consensus on the LA Boards is that this is another case of an agent for an over-the-hill player using LAG as a means of generating interest for his client. It's a non-starter. Doubt that LAG made any overtures.
The guy has little gas left in the tank. And, to me, he was more of a two-way guy anyway, never a great pure defender.
It works i just renegotiated my compensation package at the firm and used the LA Galaxy by suggesting they put in an offer for my legal services. Next thing i know i got dental thrown in for free and use of the partners lounge suite on every other Thursday.
This gets old after a while, Galaxy expressing interest in another player they can't afford. I guess the Gals forget they are already over the cap.
Don't be so gullible. Most likely LAG NEVER expressed any interest. Arena knows darn well what his cap situation is. LAG's name is being used again by an agent who doesn't know anything about MLS except that Beckham got a big deal - thus the really stupid "free spending Galaxy" comment.
OTOH, after reading Arena's analysis of his own salary cap situation with Ridge Mahoney over at Soccer America, he might be thinking he has Donovan's $400K plus their "your suck" allocation of around $350K to toss around at somebody. I don't know if Huegara wuold play for that amount, but I suppose it's possible at this point in his career.
If the league sells Landon to Bayern, the LAST thing LAG will be needing is an over-age defender. Yeah, Bruce would have some bucks to throw around, but give him the credit for being able to figure out what the team would need if it is without Donovan next year.
True enough, but then they would need help BOTH in the back and up front. But I agree wasting it all on an over-age defender wouldn't be prudent.
