Albyn Jones Ratings The last set of Albyn Jones ratings have been posted. This is the last set before the selction committee makes the 64 choices for the tournament. I understand the committee doesn't use these numbers in their considerations. It will be interesting to match their choices with the non-political AJ ratings. http://www.soccerratings.com/W03D1.html Of note, #4 Penn State #8 Virginia #10 Texas AM #14 Colorado #15 Texas #18 Wake Forest #28 Connecticut #37 Ohio State all lost 1st round games in their respective conference championships. How many conferences are guaranteed bids, and how many at large bids are there?

NSCAA Rankings It's been fun for a non-football fan to listen to the controversy about the BCS rankings/AP poll/USAToday poll mess. Don't trust the computers seems to be the common thought. The NSCAA poll has the same problem; humans voting on most recent experience. They have as the top 10: 1 UNC 2 UConn 3 UCLA 4 FSU 5 Santa Clara 6 Penn State 7 Portland 8 Florida 9 Notre Dame 10 West Virginia http://www.nscaa.com/rank/20031208/D1W/0/index.html If you follow the logic that to reach the national championship game makes you 2nd best at worst presumes the brackets are fair; we know that isn't correct. To follow that logic, Notre Dame can be no better than 17th since they lost in the 2nd round. You can't fault UConn for the brackets. and they won five games in a row to get to the finals, but SCU, UCLA and Portland are better teams. The final Albyn Jones ratings should be available shortly; they should have a different story. The Soccer AMerica, Soccer Times and Soccer Buzz polls are not available
Last note on 2003 polls The Albyn Jones final rankings are out: http://www.soccerratings.com/W03D1.html The power ranked top ten are: 1 UNC 2 UCLA 3 Portland 4 Penn State 5 SCU 6 Florida 7 West Virginia 8 Notre Dame 9 Florida State 10 Pepperdine Connecticut is 16th. These rankings look to be a little more reality based. Still waiting on final polls from Soccer America, Soccer Times and Soccer Buzz. To think that Santa Clara was required to play in order the 14th, 19th, 3rd and 1st ranked teams in the tournament. Now off my soapbox.
Soccer Buzz poll Soccer Buzz has their final poll: http://www.soccerbuzz.com/2003rankings/rankings2003.htm Soccer America and Soccer Times remain silent. 1) Carolina 2) UCLA 3) Santa Clara 4) Connecticut 5) Florida State 6) Portland 7) Penn State 8) Florida 9) West Virginia 10) Notre Dame They article comments that the Big East has 5 teams in the top 25; that's funny, they are only the 8th best conference by the Albyn Jones ratings. The Pac 10 with the best or second best conference rating (depending on whether you like mean or median rating) has only two teams.
