I know this topic has been reported on already...however it seems like the door is closing rather fast on trying to aquire Effenberg. Say what you want about his age , but he still has the skills to command most midfields across the globe. With him owning a house in Florida and with most big clubs not being able to afford the German, MLS might actually have a chance of offering a decent pay check and 1st team football. If we could could guarantee his services for at least 2 years then I would sign him. Here's a little piece on Effenberg : http://www.soccernet.com/europe/news/2002/0808/20020808effenberg.html
The part about big clubs not being able to afford him kind of shoots the MLS getting him in the head .
If MLS is going to spend the money to get a top footballer like Effenberg, he must bring a certain mass media appeal. Whether they delivered on that appeal or not, Matthaeus, Stoitchkov and Hernandez all had that perceived appeal. Effenberg does not. Even among soccer fans,Effenberg is best known for getting himself permanently kicked off the German Nats. I can't imagine MLS being interested in a player with that kind of background, even if he is a good fit on the field.
Re: Re: Last chance for Effenberg... Like most people I know, I hate Effenberg with a passion...however, even though he did get kicked off the national team, later on they were begging him to come back (Ribbeck and Voeller)... Be great if he joined the Mutts...just another reason to hate them (but i do doubt that MLS can afford him...he still has some gas left in the tank...just watch out if he flips the bird again!?!?!?)
