Looks like the boys salvaged some dignity with a 3-1 victory today: Lyn match report 14' - SJ goal (Corralles?) 29' - Lyn yellow card 38' - SJ goal 76' - Lyn goal (Johann Gudmundsson) 84' - Lyn red card 90' - SJ goal San Jose finishes the La Manga cup in 7th place with a 1-2-1 record (5 goals scored, 7 goals allowed). "Sidenote: Lyn lost all four matches at the La Manga Cup by an aggregate score of 13 to 2...ouch!!!" And the 2 goals scored was penalties
No mater how badly you do at a tournament it always helps to win the last game, even if they are meaningless. On to Miami.
i'm almost sure there were only 8 teams. a good win for confidence. if they hadn't won ANY games, they may have felt a tad blue. they did it without mulrooney and donovan as well (and deRo come to think of it), so the rest of the guys can take some pride in this. well done.
Hmmm ... let's see: Two American teams (Quakes, Galaxy) Two Russian teams (Torpedo, Rubin) Rosenborg, Viking, Odd Grenland, Lyn ... yes, that's only eight ..
Lyn's results at La Manga last year were just as bad - and they leapt out to a clear lead through the first half of the Norwegian season, finishing 2002 with third place (ahead of Odd and Viking). Preseason matches don't mean much. While it's always sad to lose, the main thing for Lyn has been to reintroduce players to action after surgery/injury. With the two returning today (Berntsen and Augustsson), Lyn's team was close to full stregth, with only 3 starters missing: wingers Jan Derek Sørensen (tired) and Mohammed Ouseb (knee surgery) and defensive mid Thomas Lagerløf (injured). On the other hand, a couple of the players hadn't played since October.
From Quakes Web Site... The Earthquakes used goals from Brian Mullan, Ramiro Corrales and Arturo Alvarez to defeat Lyn Oslo 3-1 in the teams final game at the La Manga Cup in Spain on Thursday. The Quakes battled through windy conditions and a number of injuries for the victory, bringing their 2003 preseason record to 2-2-1. Corrales struck first on a penalty kick in the 15th minute and Mullan headed in a shot in the 38th minute. Alvarez finished the scoring in the 93rd minute with a powerful shot.
"Quakes goalkeeper Jon Conway made a big save to keep the lead at two goals in the 64th minute. Helgi Sigurdsson found space near the top of the 18-yard box and one-timed a shot after receiving a low cross. Conway dove to his right to make the save" maybe he's not so bad, when playing low game?
I had the same thought, I'll keep my fingers crossed. "Despite using their fourth different line-up in as many games in the tournament" This is exactly what should be happening in a PRE-season tournament, lots of time for the players to be evaluated to see who will be able to contribute. I'll worry about results of the last game or two of pre-season, not any before then.
> This is exactly what should be happening in a > PRE-season tournament, lots of time for the > players to be evaluated to see who will be able > to contribute. I agree. And seeing how we won both games without Ekelund and did not win a game with him, the lesson is clear.
>And seeing how we won both games without Ekelund and did not win a game with him, >the lesson is clear. "Don't dink with the Dane's paycheck." 2 goals for 2 games, not bad.
"Man Advantage" goal? Are you talking about the Lyn game? If so, according to the Quakes Web Site, Lyn was down to ten players at the end of the game... After Lyn midfielder Jonny Hansen received his second yellow to put both teams at 10 men, Alvarez put the game away after a nice through ball from Corrales.
> I agree. And seeing how we won both games > without Ekelund and did not win a game with him, > the lesson is clear. Oh, and we should sit those slackers Donovan and Mulrooney as well.
You're not gullible. You're a hot babe with a good head on her shoulders. So. What are you doing after the game?
