Right. They have a good tradition, but not on the level of the Yankees, Notre Dame, Manchester United, Barcelona, etc. I meant something on that level. It just seems that in L.A., fans are too fickle and/or the market is so full of sports options that teams don't develop that kind of history and following.
Carlos, you speak the soccer marketing gospel. I pointed out the differences between the western and eastern U.S. Hispanic populations to an English writer who couldn't understand why Tampa Bay and Miami were losing their top flight teams.
Coincidentally, USC goes for its 700th victory this weekend, becoming only the 10th school to do so. USC football has been around since 1888. 8 national titles. 5 heisman trophy winners. 20 Rose Bowl victories. Too many all-americans to recall. I'd say that SC has A TON of tradition. http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/pac10/southern_california/index.php Fight On! Now back to your futbol discussion...
Deep breath, close your eyes, Carlos, you can do it... U S C DOES have a lot of tradition. Whew!! If you're from LA, you undestand the role the team plays in the city. but i will say that it's tradition isn't as strongly rooted in LA as the Yanks are in USA. But I may be biased...
Personally, I think we need a "new" city. I believe in part, anyway, in a "national" footprint type of idea, and sticking another team in LA obviously isn't going to increase the national footprint. Obviously I'd prefer San Diego since that's where I'm from, but if it was in Houston or somewhere else that'd be fine too (I can still head up to the HDC for 1/2 dozen games a year, plus other oddities). I just think we need a few more teams spread out across the land. My notion probably doesn't hold up to scrutiny, but it still feels right. (Basically MLS needs to expand to the Northwest, but Chivas ain't going there.)
Very well done Carlos. I know that was difficult for you to write ;-) I will now say something nice about that other LA school: UCLA futbol has a lot of tradition too. More OT: After being an SC football season ticket holder for 13 years, I will finally be making my first trip to Notre Dame in a couple of weeks. My only disappointment is that I will not be able to check out the Fire-Rapids game at the new Soldier Field while I am in the Chicago area. That would have made my sports weekend complete. Cheers.
