Just to put this forward a bit more. If folks like the Mayor of SF and Andrew Sullivan were to get real on this subject, they could probably win the battle for civil unions handily. Maybe the election results tempered their enthusiasum for legal marriages, or maybe not. Sometimes folks don't really want a win as much as they do a good and pure fight for what they believe is right.
