In my opinion the greatest striker in Chelsea's history (I'm no where near old enough to actually see him play), his record was phenomenal, I've spoken to people that did see him play and the one thing I hear over again is that he 'glided' across the pitch and bearing in mind that pitches back then were like ploughed fields it leaves you wondering how he did it? An incredible finisher I think he scored goals on EVERY debut he made, for Chelsea, for Milan, for Spurs, for West Ham and for England. In his final game for Chelsea he scored 4 times in a season when he scored 41 times in total in only 40 appearances! Perhaps unsurprisingly we were relegated the season after he left! https://footballwhispers.com/blog/jimmy-greaves-englands-ultimate-goal-scoring-machine/ How much money would he be worth in today's game!?
'A lot' is the answer to that one... You can get a flavour of him but, tbh, what you can't really see there is what he was playing on, (which was often like a ploughed field, as you say), and the ball which, when it was a bit damp, would end the game like a lump of lead.
Jimmy Greaves drank 12 pints and a bottle of vodka a day. Jimmy had an amazing turn of pace and his goal scoring record is truly amazing. Look at the numbers. The numbers don't lie. Appearances and goals. Chelsea 157 (125) AC Milan 12 (9) Spurs 321 (220) West Ham 38 (13) His England scoring record was the 4th best of all time, despite the fact that him and Sir Alf really did not get along. England should have played him a lot more. Greaves holds the record for the most hat-tricks for England – six. 57 England app. 44 goals.
Even I am too young to have seen Greaves in blue but he is a legend. He joins his mate Ian who died earlier this year
