I guess that's why they were playing footsie with Memo Ochoa and William Yarborough.
Well, well, well...
FC Dallas' Jesse Gonzalez named to 40 man US Gold Cup Roster
Your move, Mexico...
We need to play him against Ghana and cap tie him, if for no other reason than that I don't want to play against him later when he matures.
Jesse doesn't need to play for the US to be tied. All he needs to do is file the one-time switch with FIFA and have it approved. He has already represented Mexico at a competitive youth tournament -- the 2015 U20 World Cup -- so a one-time switch is required to be on the USMNT final Gold Cup roster in the first place. The same thing happened with the likes of Fabian Johnson and Julian Green who had represented Germany at competitive youth level. They became locked in to the US when they signed and submitted the paperwork, not when they played for the US. Even if Jesse never actually plays a game for the US, he can only play for the US and not Mexico if he files the switch.
That said, I would agree that Gonzalez deserves at least some PT in the Gold Cup based on the form he is in. What a coup for the US if they can pull this off. The '95 keeper class of Horvath, Gonzalez, and Steffen is the best the US has had in at least a decade, likely longer. That really could be the top 3 for the future.
Yeah, I think that Jesse can be better than both Hamid and Johnson. He just needs to focus on taking his game to the next level. The sky is the limit for him.
He definitely needs to work on his organizing skills. His shot stopping skills are very good and he's obviously up for pressure situations as we saw vs Seattle in 2015.
Chuck is correct, but the reality is Jesse is going to end up with the nation that gives him the best chance to actually play on the senior team. And FWIW, there are SIX keepers on this preliminary roster, including OCSC's Bendik (??) - so this is largely a "hey, we're thinking about you" kinda move.
GOALKEEPERS (6): Joe Bendik (Orlando City SC), Jesse Gonzalez (FC Dallas), Brad Guzan (Atlanta United FC), Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Tim Howard (Colorado Rapids), Sean Johnson (New York City FC)
