We paid what, 12 mil for a 1.5 year deal, if he gets us Champions League football or helps us win the league is anyone going to say that wasn't worth it?
Jorginho in is pretty much confirmed, Marquinhos is confirmed to Norwich, and it seems Sambi is heading on loan to Palace.
That’s my view. We aren’t signing him for 5 years. I hope he doesn’t play a single minute in the league this season, but he’s a perfectly adequate insurance option
he's better than Sambi or Elneny Interesting to see that Sambi is now going out on loan which is maybe a surprise - i guess it's sink or swim for him now
Yes - arse needs more of the SAF black market Vieira takes Arse products and lets us win when we need it
We play Soton then 4 days later play City. If we are winning the Soton game, taking off Partey at 50mins/60mins and putting Jorginho on so that Partey is ready for City is where this will be an astute bit of business. If Jorginho can do well in EL matches to give Partey a chop out, Partey doesn't get worn down and we have a real chance to win the league. I trust Jorginho to come in and do well. I didn't trust Sambi.
Seems some people really like this deal Everybody, calm down. Reading so much negativity about Jorginho, how he’s “only cover” and “won’t improve the team” or “he’s not a long-term option”. We’re buying a slot-in, world-class ball recuperator, recycler and - crucially- progressor. Just look at the @fbref stats. 🔴⚪️ pic.twitter.com/sSgQn6KghH— Matt Scott (@Matt5cott) January 31, 2023
Not one of the tv or radio pundits has so far said they think Jorginho is a good fit for Arsenal .. Interesting
If Willian gets the club back into the top 4, is anyone going to say that wasn't worth it? If I invest my life savings in the lottery and I win, is anyone going to say that wasn't worth it? This sort of argument makes it too easy to justify any dumb decision. I think we should be more critical. That said, you make a good point with your preface. If it had been 20m and 2.5 or 3.5 years, I would have hated this deal with a passion. These terms are not awful. If the club lands other targets in the summer, whether it is Rice, Caicedo, Zubimendi, etc, it wouldn't shock me if they sell Jorginho on to Italy for like 7m and it ends up effectively being a half season loan. My bigger worry is that the club is in the position they are in right now because of a policy of buying u23's. Now that the squad is competitive, are they abandoning that policy by buying 28 and 31 year olds? Or is this really just a short term adjustment for being top of the table? Also curious if they go back in for 18 year old Fresneda after not spending the money bid for Caicedo.
I think the answer to that is that if Party really did get injured, there are not many 23 year olds who can step into the role that Arsenal can actually buy in the Jan window. Even Caicedo I question, as you are talking about a guy who is 21 and never played for a top side. So the options are to buy someone like Tielemanns who is really expensive and not as good as Partey that we are then stuck with on a dumb contract or just find someone who is better than Sambi/Neny - is experienced, and fills the gap. Like I'd much rather have Jorg on the bench to cover the 6 role than Sambi or Neny.
This seems like a smart bit of business. An experienced top of the table DM who won't get in the way of bringing in a Caciedo or Rice in the summer. Building a great team requires amassing talent but you also have to remember that you can't have too many mouths to feed. Jorginho isn't going to demand to be in our starting XI every week. He has won championships. I also don't think this prevents us from getting Caciedo if we want.
Sperz fans are weighing in: for Arsenal, Jorginho isn't a *perfect* fit -- he doesn't have Partey's mobility as a deep lying cm -- but he's a good premier league central midfielder who is a plus-plus passer and Arsenal only have two of those and they can't be *certain* one of them won't, uh, disappear https://t.co/lK3wIcM6kW— Michael Caley (@MC_of_A) January 31, 2023
To be fair the ex players and managers know a tad more about football than anyone in here ( I include myself in that )
ManU are supposedly in the market for a midfielder now Eriksen is out for 3 months !! Maybe they will go for Jorginho
it's an interesting question whether they know anything that is actually useful. We've seen quite often that just because you were part of a top side as a player, doesn't mean you understand how to deliver high performance. The motivational poster paradox. Arteta made motivational wenger posters, and arse improved, therefore motivational posters work. But every team have motivational posters.
[QUOTE="CarlosKaiser, post: 41154478, member: 314908" My bigger worry is that the club is in the position they are in right now because of a policy of buying u23's. [/QUOTE] The plan was never to sign u23s forever. At some point "the process" needs to deliver, and I think we are ahead of schedule if we win the title this year. So we're making short-term signings because the need for short-term solutions got moved up.
Oddly enough Paul Merson was on sky sports a few moments ago … saying he LOVES the Jorginho deal .. saying his calmness , composure and experience is EXACTLY what is needed now
Partey's contract expires 2025. Both Xhaka & Jorginho expire 2024. Believe Xhaka has an option for 2025. If we find the replacements for Partey & Xhaka this summer we are in really good shape to transition and get younger in the MF before these contracts run out.
Partey is good for another 5 years isn’t Jen? I wouldn’t say he’s reliant on his speed after all .. he’s amazing in the midfield and can’t see anyone being much more effective - certainly not Rice who’s having a disastrous season and captaining his club to relegation playing horrid football
We should try to quantify that value. How much is a backup DM worth in terms of league points over Sambi or Elneny over the course of half a season? Or how much is he worth over some other alternative, like if they had signed Danilo before he went to Forest? If Partey stays healthy, the point difference is very small. If Partey breaks his leg against Everton and misses the rest of the season, someone will try to argue that Jorginho is worth 10 points or something which is ridiculous mathematically. Odds are that Jorginho won't be a factor in whether or not Arsenal win the league or finish top 4.
So we lost Elneny, bring Jorginho in but also are losing Sambi? So don’t we still need another midfielder?
