Gentile's side, who are already qualified, face Slovenia. The Game is about to get underway.

Are you watching it somehow? I expect Pazzini and Montolivo to start and I'm curious to see if Donadel gets in there.

It's on RAI International. But, that stupid Journalist strike is going on and there is no commentary. I didn't even know Pazzini was playing until he scored in the 17th. But Slovenia equalized. Donadel, who is usually the U-21 captain, isn't playing. I think Montolivo is on the bench.

    1-1 right now...

It's 1-0 HT. The scorer was Palladino. Donadel is not playing while Montolivo is (Pirlo's position) and he's playing a good match. There's also Chiellini. Cagliari's Canini is also playing a good game (I really like the guy).
    Italy is dominating.

I am not entirely sure about the lineup but it should be

    Curci
    Motta
    Canini
    Bovo
    Chiellini
    Montolivo
    Galloppa
    ? edit - Sammarco
    Rosina
    Palladino
    Pazzini

I saw Italy's goal, but then I saw Livescore.com said Slovenia scored. But now it has been reverted to 1-0. I remember watching Canini play at this summer's u-20 tourney, and he impressed me. Maybe he will become the next great defender.

www.livescore.com can never be trusted. It has Pazzini as the goalscorer.

1-0 FT. Italy are just cruising through qualifying and end on Tuesday vs. Moldova, who beat Norway 2-1 today.

my lineup was incorrect. Change Motta with Potenza. Motta entered in the SH like Coda and Defendi (Rosina, Galloppa and Bovo out).
I didn't see the disallowed goal in the first half, I was dining.

In the second half two more goals were disallowed one for Italy and one for Slovenia. Two clear offsides.

The pitch was horrible because of a lot of rain and most of the SH was boring with Slovenia attacking the most but without creating any real danger a part from 1 or 2. But also Italy had some chances.

When the game was over, RAI put up their scoreboard and they listed Pazzini as the scorer.

Yes i know but they just got it wrong and thus misleading other media reports.

    http://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Nazionale/Primo_Piano/2005/10_Ottobre/07/under.shtml

L'Italia, già qualificata agli spareggi di novembre per l'Europeo, piega la Slovenia 1-0 con un gol di Palladino. Gli azzurrini non vincevano dal 25 marzo

I liked Montolivo as a playmaker. Still he needs more consistency but he showed that's the best position in the field for his future career. Lots of quality and a decent amount of hard work, reminds me of Demetrio Albertini which his enough said for his qualities and possibilities.

This u21 could play a midfield with De Rossi, Donadel, Aquilani, Montolivo + other very interesting players like for example Sammarco, also Motta played as right midfielder.
    Really great quality there.

Palladino is a very talented striker, excellent skill with the ball, speed and dribbling. No surprise he's doing well with Livorno.
The goal was a beautiful touch and it was not easy.

    Re: U-21 Qualifier Italy v. Slovenia [r]

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Istria

The region has traditionally been rather ethnically mixed. Under Austrian rule in the 19th century, it included a large population of Italians, Croats, Slovenes and some Vlachs/Istro-Romanians and Serbs. In 1910, the ethnic and linguistic composition was completely mixed. One source quotes 170,000 Croats (43%), 150,000 Italians (38%) and 55,000 Slovenes (14%), another quotes 138,654 speakers of Serbo-Croatian (Croats and Serbs), 136,039 Italian and 55,008 Slovenian.

After World War I, Istria passed from Austrian Habsburg rule to that of Italy. During these few decades, the Slavs complained of being forced to Italianize their names under the policy of forced Italianization. Some Croats allege further that the Fascist regime of Benito Mussolini colonized Istria with up to 50,000 more Italians (from Calabria, Sicily). The subsequent Nazi occupation during World War II further worsened the once traditionally tolerant ethnic relations.

After the end of World War II, Istria was assigned to Socialist Yugoslavia. In the process, (1945-1954), many Italian speakers were killed (see: foibe) and until 1960 most of the Italian speakers (300,000 was the number in a speech made by Tito) left Istria, Dalmatia and Rijeka. This process can be described as the Italians leaving due to fear of the Communist oppression, and as them being ethnically cleansed by the Communists. Some well-known postwar exiles from Istria include race driver Mario Andretti, singer Sergio Endrigo and boxer Nino Benvenuti. Following the exodus, the areas were settled with Croats, Slovenians and a minute number of other Yugoslav nationalities like Serbs or Montenegrins.

    etc. etc.

    Re: Italy's Class of '83-'84 (U-21s) [R]

Italy finished off qualifying with another 1-0 win yesterday, over Moldova, on another goal by Palladino, in the 85th minute. Claudio Gentile also had praise for Graziano Pelle', in his first appearance with the U-21s. Pelle's pass set up Palladino's strike.

    Italy's lineup:

    1-Berni
    2-Dellafiore
    3-Marchese
    4-Chiellini
    5-Canini
    6-Coda
    7-Rosina (55'-Galloppa)
    8-Defendi
    9-Pelle'
    10-Capelli (82'-Donadel)
    11-Pepe (60'-Palladino)

Meanwhile, the draw for the final qualification playoffs takes place tomorrow in Nyon. Italy will be in Pot 1 as the group-winner so will play one of the teams from Pot 2 (except Italy cannot play Slovenia):-

    Pot 1
    Netherlands
    Denmark
    Portugal
    France
    Italy
    Germany
    Belgium
    Croatia

    Pot 2
    Czech Republic
    Ukraine
    Switzerland
    Slovenia
    England
    Serbia&Montenegro
    Hungary
Russia (unless they lose by 5 or more goals to Slovakia in today's final group match)

    Re: Italy's Class of '83-'84 (U-21s) [R]

Italy has drawn Hungary for November's qualifying playoff. I don't know much about Hungary's youth teams, but going on strength of full national sides, I'd have to say this is about the best draw Italy could've gotten out of the teams in Pot 2. The rest of the playoff draw:

    England vs France (!)
    Serbia&Montenegro vs Croatia (!!)
    Ukraine vs Belgium
    Russia vs Denmark
    Czech Republic vs Germany
    Slovenia vs Netherlands
    Switzerland vs Portugal

After the playoffs are complete, the host team will be chosen from among the remaining 8. Italy has never hosted in the 6 times the championship has used this format, so (if they get past Hungary), there might be a chance although Italy is also bidding to host the 2007 edition (which will have a predetermined host for the first time), so the FIGC may not even bid for this one.

    Re: Italy's Class of '83-'84 (U-21s) [R]

Here are Claudio Gentile's callups for the playoff series vs Hungary:

    Portieri: Curci (Roma), Mirante (Siena)
Difensori: Bovo (Roma), Canini (Cagliari), Chiellini (Juventus), Coda (Empoli), Dellafiore (Treviso), Mantovani (Chievo), Potenza (Mallorca)
Centrocampisti: Defendi (Atalanta), Donadel (Fiorentina), Galloppa (Triestina), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Motta (Udinese), Rosina (Torino), Sammarco (Chievo), Biondini (Reggina)
Attaccanti: Palladino (Livorno), Pazzini (Fiorentina), Pellè (Lecce), Pepe (Palermo).

Siena's keeper Mirante is a new face. Aquilani and Bianchi are both out injured.
