Possibly, but since when should a midfielder be the last defender inside the 18? This was not a breakaway. Even when Paule gets beat there is no way a player should be able to make a pass to himself without a defender picking that up.
What you didn't see on tv was Paule reading the play when the ball was coming down the opposite side of the field and sprinting around 50 yards to get into position in the box. He got beat but it wasn't from lack of effort.
