Is Lauryn Hill a druggie or something?

The public meltdown of Lauryn Hill, which has been apparent for five years, moved further into the realm of the bizarre Wednesday night during a late-starting sold-out show at Oakland's Paramount Theatre. The 32-year-old New Jersey singer-rapper's 90-minute performance mixed new, unfamiliar material with hits from a decade past, most of them rendered unrecognizable by radical new arrangements and a blaring, poorly balanced sound mix.

Aural audience response was divided between cheers and boos. Others sat and stood in silence, their mouths agape at what they were hearing and seeing.

Her hair in an unkempt rust-colored Afro, Hill wore a green-and-yellow plaid jacket that appeared to be made of wool and an ankle-length black skirt, looking not unlike a bag lady one might encounter at a taco truck on International Boulevard. She held a microphone in her right hand and a black handkerchief in her left, frequently wiping sweat from her face as she paced the stage.

She got off easy compared to the San Ho Merc's review, which all but stated she was high.

The 32-year-old vocalist then turned to 1998's landmark "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" - a work that, amazingly, still stands as her most recent studio effort - for a garbled version of "Lost Ones." Her voice was terrible, so harsh, strained and unlike what one hears on the masterful "Miseducation" CD. She also sounded like she's out of shape, huffing and puffing like a weekend warrior after only a few songs.

But it wasn't just her voice that was shaky. Hill stumbled about the stage and, at one point, actually fell flat on her back - which brought into question exactly what the singer had been doing backstage during the long delay.

Of course, Hill would find that question ludicrous. She blamed her stage fall on her high heels and, later in the show, took the time to assure the crowd that she was sober.

Assuming she was telling the truth then that's one less excuse Hill has for her terrible outing, which included shoddy and uninspired vocal performances on such formerly great "Miseducation" tunes as "To Zion" and "Final Hour."

I also liked this from Pras when the Fugees broke up again:

During an interview with SOHH.com Pras confirmed that a Fugees re-union is "straight dead." He indicated this was due to Lauryn Hill having "some issues she needs to deal with" and further wishing her "all the best."

Grace Jones would show up 2 hours late for her concerts but would put on a kick ass show.

Lauryn has to have some respect her audience; especially those who forked out $90 a ticket to see her. Those last comments by Ms. Hill, to those who stayed was off-putting at best and unprofessional at worst.

Any one remember that song by Talib Kweli - Miss Hill but yeah thats just sad whats happened with Lauryn Hil.
