I can't find any reference to him with an internet search outside of his exploits with Tampa, Colorado, or Olympiakos, nor is the search of this site working for me (it keeps saying that I use too few parameters). Does anyone know where he's playing? Please let me know. Thanks.
I've found evidence of him having trials here and there over the years, but I'm not aware of him playing anywhere at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he's in a lower European division somewhere as I'm sure he could play lower-division US ball if he wanted/needed to.
My Greek friends all call each other malakas when they are kidding around with each other (taking the piss, as they say in the UK). I wouldn't get too wound up about it.
OK, that's cool. The "malakas.org" website said something to that effect. I do want to see what Gus is doing nowadays. He may have just enrolled in college. I'm wondering why he isn't at least playing on the A-League level.
There was an article about Gus when he played for the Mutes. He comes from a family that is fairly affluent, having made a lot of money running restaurants and a bakery north of Tampa, where there is a large Greek community. Combine that with the money he allegedly made playing - er, sitting - in Greece and he probably is hanging out at the beach, clubbing and regailing hotties with stories of playing soccer in Europe. He went over there pretty young so maybe he is reliving the late adolescence he didn't get to have when he was the right age. In otherwords, I doubt he's working at McDonald's. When he was with the Mutes, I always got the sense he had a lot of talent in terms of pure technical skill but he always seemed to be zigging while the rest of the team zagged. He just seemed out of psynch with the rest of the team, despite his skill. In fairness, that was a pretty dysfunctional team so it's not like a lot of guys were on the same page to begin with so that didn't likely help, either. I know he had a look with the Fire the next preseason and didn't stick so maybe by then his attitude was too far gone. Who knows? It just goes to show that there is more to making it than talent.
It was probably more like the Mutes were not in synch with him, i.e. he was two steps ahead. Gus was a very skilled, intelligent player, but he liked to party too much and didn't have the athletic ability to make it at the highest level. As you say, he's rich now, and probably doesn't have to work.
I have to say I never saw a hint of evidence of that.I had heard about him and watched him play a few times. I must say I was very disappointed. He just looked like he could not play at the MLS level, period.
