First of all thanks for JBigjake and some other members for their contributions on this thread. This week and especially tomorrow is going to be a big day in Iranian history. The people of Iran have invested their lives, time, and energy into this cause and they are not looking back and forgetting their fallen brothers & sisters. And the regime has acted too oppressively and made too many mistakes along the way and they are not looking back either and are not about to make any compromises. Not that the Iranian people would accept any compromise just as they didn’t when Shah tried to save his government by making a lot of promises during the last days of his government in 79. Even if Mussavi accepted a compromise from the government people would refuse. This is no longer about the elections, this is about changing the government in Iran and making massive political reforms. In the coming days , months, perhaps a couple of years there is going to a big show down in Iran , 2010 could very well be the end of the Islamic Republic.

There are mass protests today in Iran. Here is a live blogging site. The first post explains why people are out today.

    http://www.dailyniteowl.com/wordpress/index.php/2009/12/27/live-blogging-ashura-protests-in-iran/

Pacific demonstrations are dealt with violence once again. Even more so the mourning of an Imam and Ayatollah Montazeri. I can't see how the gouvernment can jusify this? Theyre digging their graves deaper an deaper.

    http://persian2english.wordpress.com/2009/12/27/following-their-religious-leader-imam-hussein-people-at-imam-hussein-square-resist-to-death/

    ran News Agency – Ashoora – 11:00
People move towards Ferdowsi square after capturing Imam Hussein Square. Armed forces violently beat anyone they find on their way, especially those riding motorbikes with white helmets. Despite ruthless attacks on demonstrators, people are resisting.
    People shout slogans:
Kamenei knows that he will soon be overthrown
    Death to this Yazidi regime
    Death to the dictator
This is a month of blood – Khamenei will be overthrown
Proud iranians – support us support us
Abolfazl the banner holder – Remove the dictator

I have read that Ali Moussavi was in the line of the Imams and that his killing on Ashura was ill-advised. Admittedly, I do not know much about Iran or the Shia but it will be interesting to see if his seventh day brings more protests.

I would bet on it. Now there are members of Govt. in Iran calling for the arrest of all protestors, and No mercy for them.

I hope Britain and the US tell them to kiss our asses.

I hope the people of Iran rise up and reclaim their nation from the despots controlling it.

That would probably be the worst thing to do. The regime is now claiming the "west" is behind all this, given the history, any stronger statement than what President Obama has said will simply strengthen the regime (it is a different situation than in the late 1980s, where a strong Western statement was necessary to the people of Eastern Europe given the exact opposite history -- the Iranians are still pissed at previous western internventions while the eastern Europeans had memorals of previous Western noninterventions)

Now, they have nobody to blame but themselves, for their government.
They let the fundies move in & take over, they will have to move the fundies out.

Which is why President Obama has so far done the right thing on Iran viz the protests, namely state that while we are concerned about the violence, it is an internal Iranian matter.

They have been trying to blame the US and the west since they stole the election. That is nothing new, but the people of Iran clearly see through that lie.

That is why the west needs to tell them to kiss our ass that we aren't involved and that we don't care what they have to say. I think that Obama is handling it the right way, I have no complaints, I do think though that if the situation does turn into a revolt and if asked we should help the people of Iran free themselves from the islamofacists in charge.

Who are "we", and what help would be provided?
AFAIK, most Iranians do not want any help from the outisde world. They've complained about prior interference by the UK & the USA, and despise the Khlaq for receiving assistance from Iraq. No matter what outsiders might do or offer, more Iranians would be offended by the intrusion that would want it, IMO. It could backlash against the regime opponents, as they would be seen as tools of foreigners.

Putting the shah into power is the biggest reason why we have an Islamic republic today. It was because of shah's stupidity these mullahs came to power. And these mullahs have learned from shah's stupidity and that's why they are hanging onto power. And I don't need to remind you how the shah came into power.

Do the math, how is it that in a city with 8 million people and on a day when hundreds of thousands took to the streets one of the opposition leaders family member gets killed . He is either extremely unlucky or it's an assassination. I always expected these types of acts by the government so I'm not surprised . I remember a couple years ago some Iranian members posted photos of Iranian police / guards because they looked "cool" . But when I called those thugs murders I was accused of being a shah supporter. But now we all know what those thugs are capable of doing. The more desperate they get the more uglier things are going to get.

Do you think the US or the west should provide any sort of tactical support for the protestors when the mullahs decide to crack down in earnest?

By tactical I don't mean sending in troops, I mean supplying them with weapons, food, water, etc...
