Drezner distinguishes between public intellectuals who tend toward skepticism about those "One Big Ideas" that explain everything, and "thought leaders," who do the things you describe for fun and profit.

And of course, the legacy media are a lot more likely to turn to (if not employ) thought leaders instead of public intellectuals. Which is why David Brooks has the job he has.

Martin's argument is a non sequitur. There's nothing hypocritical or illogical about supporting strikers from a company that you don't patronize. Or supporting management. The issues are unconnected.
