It makes sense if it were a “thanks Obama” joke. Even a bit meta, since Obama -> Biden.

    Alas.

    edit: @JohnR was on it.

Brooks is a conservative pundit and his whole career has been consistently rewarded for awful takes, so he thinks his takes are actually good. Him trying to poke fun over his self inflicted bill, in a MAGA way at Biden’s expense, shows that he’s more MAGA than RINO even if he and his “fans” can’t accept that.

In addition to that the MSM feels that they still need to give him time and space; that’s all you need to know about the current state of the media.

I don’t think he is MAGA. He’s just an old reactionary like Bret Stephens.

I was at the NAFSA international education conference roughly 6 or 7 years ago where he was the keynote speaker. I didn't go to his talk.

And provide support to Trump, intentionally or otherwise.

If it's intentional, then damn him.

If it's unintentional, then he is a dangerous fool.

Yeah, he’s not a MAGAt in a, let’s say a Breitbart sense, but that his bad takes align so well with MAGA shows that the whole “serious republican” was mostly a ruse, and that their true heart lies with semi fascism, even if they don’t like the full fledged coupy members of their party.

Yeah, they're still willing to do what it takes to undermine Democrats so that Republicans will benefit, even if the Republicans are pro-fascism.

He's definitely not MAGA. This column's attack on Trump is as fierce as what a progressive could muster -

    https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/15/opinion/trump-indictment-president.html

For example, this paragraph about Trump's influence on GOP voters is both true and devastating -

    And -

I mean, he doesn't go as far I would. "Spreads his counter-gospel" is an indirect way of stating that Christians who vote for Trump are supporting an agent of Satan. Whereas I say that directly.

But hey, it's on the right track.

Here's how I'm looking at his "joke".

His "joke" inherently benefits Republicans against Democrats, given the current President is Democrat.

For someone knowledgeable and with access to nationwide publicity, that is incredibly irresponsible if he actually sees MAGA as a threat to American democracy.

If he doesn't see MAGA as a threat to American democracy, he's incredibly ignorant.

No matter how you look at it, it's a massive fail.

Putting my take on a different way, even non MAGATS republicans vote with MAGATs like 95% of the time, The only differences between one and the other is that old school republicans see some merit in government and that they’ll accept election results even if their cheating is not enough. They agree pretty much in the rest.

The problem with David Brooks, representative of the major issues with our media, is that he’s just a person who has opinions who is regularly put in front of the camera (or in print etc.) as an “expert” on everything. And he embraces it 100%. I blame PBS at least as much as him for this.

Is it a good decision for the US to back Ukraine? Here’s David Brooks.

Is the House Republicans failure to pass a spending bill bad for Democrats? Here’s David Brooks.

Are Trump’s legal troubles bad for him or a boost to his election chances? Here’s David Brooks.

I’m sure he is very knowledgeable in a some areas. But his knee jerk opinions on everything that PBS and NYT promote as invaluable insight that will better inform the public is contributing to the decline of our society. Obviously he’s not the only one, but he may be the best example of an “intellectual” whose existence is overwhelming a negative.

That's a fresh and interesting take. I must confess, I agree with that. Which makes us both snot-faced elites, thinking that the opinion of experts about topics that they have studied for 1000s of hours are more valuable than the opinion of the guys in the diner. You dick, you.

Much appreciated, but I’m ABSOLUTELY NOT a “snot-faced elite” (wipes nose with monogrammed silk handkerchief in disgust)!!!

He apparently has a net worth of $57M. If this is upper middle class, I am definitely in the very low income bracket then. This ********er and reactionary buffoon is so out of touch with reality.
I am surprised he has not been dragged yet on that.
