Speaking on a variety of subjects. His comments about transfers and United's position are interesting and noteworthy.

I've been harsh on Ole with regard to coaching buildup because I don't believe he has (m)any thoughts on it.

I may have been quick to judge or he may have taken counsel on the matter.

It looks as though we're doing some different things with Pogba's return. We added a new wrinkle to our short GKs with the same starting position but a different run when we put the ball in play.

We're definitely asking Shaw and Wan-Bissaka to do different things in the 2nd phase of the attack. We are also clearly coaching Rashford up. He's added a layer to his game that wasn't developed AT ALL prior to this season.

We had started to drop a CM into a RCB or LCB position during build up when the press is not intense. It gives Maguire the opportunity to play center field and opens up his long passing to either channel which is a good thing. Teams absolutely respect his long passing and they will press him when he's got the ball in a position to do damage. That means that Matic or Pogba are not always the primary focus of the press.

When that happens, you end up with attackers running at Pogba or Matic and they are both capable of beating a lazy 2nd press.

with 2 CBs and a CM making the shape of

    -------------XXX-----------------XXX-------------------XXX

in build up, we allow both Shaw and AWB to advance up the pitch. Frequently AWB will anticipate an outlet ball and be up the pitch. Shaw tends to wait for an opportunity. That means we have an extra 1st phase runner and an extra 2nd phase runner while maintaining cover. This is key in breaking down teams that want to drop off.

In the 1st phase Rashford and Greenwood look to be releasing and sometimes Martial will drop deep to facilitate moving the ball up if a longer pass isn't on. Instead of being on his own, Bruno is almost always close by for a quick lay-off. If a quick outlet isn't achieved, AWB retreats a little and stays super wide.

Shaw will frequently underlap (overlap but on the inside) making his run twds the box for a through ball (there've been a few examples of this in the last few matches) or out wide to set up for a cross.

Rashford tends to take up a position almost mirroring AWB. Hugging the touchline. However, he's been encouraged to find runners. He nearly put Bruno through twice in the last couple games and he is also hitting Shaw down the line.

The forethought with this that I enjoy is that AWB and Marcus are very likely to beat a man 1v1 so teams can't simply allow them possession. It seems like a good position from which to press (the flank is an extra defender) but their ability on the ball and the space afforded them (Mase is frequently in the channel, not on the line and Shaw is bursting forward) means that if teams get it wrong there will be a price to pay.

All of this to say that there are patterns to our play. It isn't just individual brilliance that is leading to these goals and chances. Our coaching staff has concrete ideas and they are building something. We are also continuing to make sound decisions with personnel.

On that topic, I think the 3CB shape in build up might be one of the reasons we aren't playing Fred at the 6. I think that's a mistake (because he's got a great leap and is less likely to get beat than Matic) but maybe also something they are just working on getting everyone more comfortable with.

Ole outlines the blueprint to success at United.

    https://www.skysports.com/football/...the-blueprint-to-success-at-manchester-united

Had starting coming around on him prior to the season being halted, but I'm 100% on board with him now. Still not sure how far he ultimately can take this team, but it does not really matter: he's taking the club firmly in the right direction and he's brought real hope to the fanbase that the club could be back to what it was.
And when it's all said and done, he'll more than likely leave the club in much, much better shape than how he found it. Really glad that he proved me and others wrong, with the job he's done overall. Long may it continue.

Really enjoyed the first season of this podcast. The interviews with RVP and Rio are a good listen as well.

Thanks for sharing, this gels with what I was seeing us do, particularly in the game we rested AWB for. If we can get some scripts for progressing to Pogba and him playing 1 touch passes to the LCB or RCB in some space to play progressive passes, we'll be in business.
