There, I said it. Been bugging me for a while, so I broke down and said it. Now, back to your regularly scheduled program.
If you want, I can forward you bunches of e-mails I always get. Better yet, let me have your e-mail address and I'll reply to them using your ID!
You mean like Olsen, Simms, Wells, Namoff, Burch, & McTavish? Cause that's likely the majority of your starters there. And we're taking over Moreno. Does Dyachenko count? Of course I know what you mean, I'd love for at least some of our primary attacking talent to be from the US, but there aren't many right now who fit the bill. Give the youth setup 4 or 5 years, they'll grow us somebody.
Year 1 Chivas tried the old 'something other than talent as our first priority when selecting players' bit. I prefer DC United to keeps it current method; it seems to have been working well, especially when compared with most other MLS teams.
You mean Americans like Jaime Moreno? Those are the kind of Americans I want. Land of opportunity, baby. There's not much that fires up my patriotic fervor, but I'm damn proud that this is a place where for over two hundred years immigrants have been able to buy opportunity and equality with their sweat. Welcome, neighbors. Hope you'll stay a while.
Amen to that, BigKris. I know what you're saying, American40, but I'd argue that inviting our brothers to the South to join us in elevating the standard of the game will result in what he's wants more quickly. Anyway, those 'Americans' we'd like to see are all over in England, where the fans are bothered by the lack of Englishmen on their teams.
That's right. It's us North, Central and South Americans allied against the evil-fortress Europe (with the exception a Chivas USA's recently signed mid Wiki, who is Swiss and that's a neutral country).
Amen. I root for the shirt -- the nationality of the players wearing it is irrelevant. If DCU feels it can be successful by acquiring Latin American players (and they have been) then stick with it. I don't see any intrinsic benefit to looking for exclusively Americans (the USA type) -- if anything, having a diverse roster might help draw some fans of other ethnic backgrounds to become DCU fans and that's a good thing. Absolutely. Moreno is every bit as American at this point as someone whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower. In fact, he basically embodies the American work ethic/success story.
A thousand times they have shouted at me, “Go home, you don’t belong here” Let me remind the Gringo That I didn’t cross the border, the border crossed me America was born free—Man divided her They drew the line so I would have to jump it And they call me Invader That’s a big error They took eight states from us—who is the invader here? I am a stranger in my own land I don’t come to make war—I’m a working man (Chorus) If history does not lie, the Powerful Nation was seated here in glory Composed of valiant warriors Indians of two continents Mingled with Spaniards And if we go by the centuries We are more American We are more American Than any son of the Anglo-Saxon (Spoken) They purchased from us, without money, the waters of the Rio Bravo They took from us Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado California too, and Nevada Even with Utah it was not enough—they also took Wyoming from us! I am of Indian blood—I am Latino—I am Mestizo We are of all colors and all occupations And if we go by the centuries Though it pains The Neighbor We are more American Than every last one of the Gringos
I don't recall this even being a consideration in the early years, when our team was decidedly international -- and awesome. When we can produce a national team pool like Argentina or Brazil, well hell, even then I wouldn't want United limited by something as random as the accident of where some player's parents happened to be from. If everyone who wasn't "originally from the DC area" left the stadium, there'd be precious few occupied seats. And if you're somehow suggesting we draw our team from TRUE US Americans -- like ,say, the top levels of the Pequot, Narragansett and Cherokee leagues -- I hardly think we'd make it past RSL. To our new hires, welcome one and all. Play hard as long as you're here. Do us proud. And if, like Jaime, you decide to stay, well that's just great. Lou Dobbs is bad enough on TV.
When MLS teams get to the level of english/european teams in terms of domestic players on the field, then you should complain. I don't know the exact stat but I would guess that most mls teams have at least 5 or 6 U.S. American starters at least.
I want players that will fight for shirt and don't care what there ethnicity or color is. Million different aspects is what makes United toughest club in league. Sorta like Barra
Of course I don't mind the new signings and I will do nothing but cheer for anyone wearing the DC jersey, but can't say I wouldn't mind a player or two battling for time on the USMNT.
Amen to that, BigKris. Yep, ditto. Of course I don't mind the new signings and I will do nothing but cheer for anyone wearing the DC jersey, but can't say I wouldn't mind a player or two battling for time on the USMNT. -- Count Ditto. I'll admit it's nice to cheer for native Americans (pun intended) if only for the sensation of our country's rising proficiency in the sport but I really don't give a rat's ass in the final analysis. I am very excited about our new South American signings. Having Wells, Burch, McTavish, Namoff, Simms & others progressing with United is plenty fine for me. There's a heck of a lot of talent in that group.
