I'm still rubbing my eyes, unable to believe what I'm looking at. Go ahead, give it a try, and confirm for me that I'm not loosing my mind. Log onto the Salt Lake Tribune's sports section today (3/31/05). There are a total of 20, yes 20, articles about soccer. 20! One about the US Men's utter demolition (save unfortunate poor finishing) of Guatemala. One is a semi-lengthy round-up of World Cup Qualifying around the globe. And then there are 18 articles about MLS or RSL. From player profiles to a team by team prieview of the season. What country is this? What the hell is going on? You know what. More and more I'm convinced that Salt Lake will become one of the true soccer paradises in America. May God bless Dave Checketts and his new friends and family in Zion. That is remarkable. Maybe this is why MLS should go into more markets where there are fewer pro-sports.
I suspected all along that MLS would be a hit in SLC...no baseball or pro football and a good chunk of the fan base that has lived overseas during their missions...also the right owners...
YOu can download a pdf file of the insert from the paper here , looks very well done. If only every MLS team had this kind of coverage!
Another aspect of this is the competition between the two papers which, as I understand it, is pretty fierce. And it doesn't hurt to have the former MLS director of communications running your PR/marketing efforts. Nice job.
Did all of these show up in the print copy or are some of these just online only? No matter though, extremely impressive. Andy
Sent my approval, thanks et al to the editors mentioned. Very controversial given I work for a Knight Ridder newspaper! (we're #2, Tribune group is #3). But, credit where credit is due, Of course, I didn't use my work's email!
