Looks like a glancing blow up the entire east coast of the US after devastating Haiti and tearing through the Bahamas. Hopefully we are better prepared for this than we were for the impact of Katrina.
Evacuation plans in place for Eastern seaboard from Miami to Cape Hatteras. I don't know if I have ever seen that kind of forecast that the entire southern coast is preparing to evacuate.
In ten days the Climate-Change denying Governor of Florida will be wanting us to build them a trillion dollars worth of sea walls.
I have a friend who is planning on going to the Tidewater area of Virginia on Sunday. The new five-day model I saw has it heading out to the Atlantic, so he might be able to actually get there. It's really moving slowly. If it was faster, it probably affect the whole Eastern seaboard, but apparently models now have it being pushed out to sea sooner by a system moving from the west.
If the people would just believe that the hurricane isn't real, it'd go away. Trump-style. Or if they just stay ignorant, the hurricane is not a problem for them. Johnson-style.
Oldest (spectrumy) 18-yo Son this morning: Are your parents (commentary: his effing grandparents) going to be ok for this storm? Me: Yes, they're on top of a hill in Connecticut. Son: Ah, forget they don't live in Florida full time. Might be time to go visit mom and dad before my kid forgets they are part of the family (he's in college now and won't go with us to FL later this coming winter).
Schools closing at 2pm. Most likely county and government offices too. I think they are evacuating the beach, at least the northern portions of Miami-Dade and most of Broward counties. Any news from Maralago?
IIRC insurance studies say that one of the least disaster-iest parts of 'Merica is central CT. Sis had a helluva ice storm a few years ago in Hartford area but not many tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, forest fires, clown attacks, etc. happenin.
The Hurricane already passed Cuba and didn't destroy Havana right? Have your way with the east coast Matthew, as long as I get to watch US soccer on Friday.
https://weather.com/news/news/hurricane-matthew-haiti-latest-news The US is sending an aircraft carrier, hospital ship and other equipment. Reported over 14,000 displaced.
This has the possibility of being more of an October surprise than anything Wikileaks has left in its quiver. If the administration responds to this situation competently, if Obama is there, involved, personally invested in the federal government's response, well, it'll not only be the right thing to do, it'll also work in his, and Clinton's, favor politically. If the administration stumbles in it's response, it'll provide fodder for the RNC. While obvious, it's worth noting that Florida is probably THE key swing state in this year's election. Mother Nature has one helluva sense of irony, no?
It is now looking to turn back to the SE. What if it combined with Nancy to form one big storm? Or looped all the way back down over the Bahamas and then back across FL?
Sad scenes out of Haiti ... Red Cross already taking donations for relief efforts ... http://www.redcross.org
