It's not a scientific survey for sure, but if you reside in the northeast you're more likely to be in the top 10:

    States Ranked: Smartest to Dumbest

The smartest state in the union is Massachusetts. The dumbest, for the second consecutive year, is New Mexico. These are the findings of the Education State Rankings, a survey by Morgan Quitno Press of the public school systems in all 50 states. States were graded on a variety of factors based on how they compare to the national average. These included such positive attributes as per-pupil expenditures, public high school graduation rates, average class size, student reading and math proficiency, and pupil-teacher ratios. States received negative points for high drop-out rates and physical violence.

    How does YOUR state rank?
    1. Massachusetts
    2. Vermont

Number 3 with a bullet, baby.

We're clearly smarter than the top two, who exist merely to supply us with decent skiing (VT) and...er....I really can't think of anything Massachusetts does that's so great.

I guess all of us people that are moving to the desert really are dumb. All you easterners should thank all the dumb people that are leaving your state and moving to Arizona and Nevada. Afterall, you have to be pretty damn dumb to move to a place where the average temperature in July 105 degrees. :D

Yeah, but the voters who screwed up the ballot were Democrats. Lord only knows what they did in other states. I gotta give the Dems credit, though, because they figured out a way to get 104% voter turnout in Detroit and 101% voter turnout in Philadelphia.

    Source?

But of course you have no source, because we all know that you're somewhere between 101% and 104% full of shit. As always. The last time you posted a verifiable statistic here was likely before you faked your own death for sympathy.

This is very tilted against the states that have a high number of young illegal aliens.

None of which has anything to do with intelligence. What this really reflects is the health of a state's education sytem. I guess the publicist thought it would get more attention passing it off as an intelligence ranking.

I suppose NY, NJ & Mass. don't have a lot of illegal aliens/recent legal immigrants.

People in the southwest for some strange reason believe they are the only part of the country dealing with immigrants. I didn't come up with the methodology of this study. But if you think your school systems are inferior, this study may confirm your suspicions. That's about the only conclusion I can draw from this.

I agree that a lot of it represented what was being spent on students, rather than the students themselves, but the section you quoted did include "student reading and math proficiency" and ""public high school graduation rates", which I think you'll admit is meant to quantify intelligence levels, not just school spending. Who knows how much the rankings where weighted to favor any particular category.

That's a very nice way of saying that we Californians are spending billion$ educating the children of illegal immigrants, most of whom don't speak English, at the expense of educating our own citizens.

Now, to address the question directly, "How Smart Is Your State?" - - -

Considering we just recalled a liberal Governor who was running the state into the ground, I would say that our state ranks #1 in the smart category. :D

Yeah, but Gore came from Tennesse (42) and Bush from Texas (34), so we must conclude that Bush is smarter than Gore.

More than 90% of the illegal immigrants in New York are illegal because they overstayed their visas. It isn't the same thing.

But presumably they're still sending their kids to public schools, no? Maybe the Cali immigrants go back & forth to Mexico more often while immigrants here stick around longer.

Is anyone surprised that Mississippi isn't dead last? In many studies dealing with education (and other issues like income) they're at the bottom. I think the new state motto is "we're first at being last."
