So I'm standing at the local parade with some friends (beverages in hand) and one of two dozen youth baseball teams is going by. A SUV towing a 15 foot flatbed trailer with about 10 kids riding and 10 kids walking around it. All of the sudden out of the corner of my eye I see the trailer bounce up and down like it just ran over a big speedbump. We quickly ascertain that it actually ran over a little leaguer. The kid had tried to jump on and didn't make it and the trailer, doing about 8 miles an hour rolled over him. From what the cop we knew told us, the kid was probably going to be all right, but had treadmarks on his stomach and could have broken some ribs (could be worse, but I haven't heard anything new).
At least he's doing his part to better the gene pool of the species. Anyone here want to chip in to buy KK a boat and a 12 pack?
Yeah, and judging by the recruiting numbers this year, they don't have to worry about too many kids trying to jump onboard.
Was it Larry Niven or Jerry Pournelle who came up with the formulation "just think of it as evolution in action?"
I would point out that many "innocent" people get injured from fireworks as well. People who dismiss the victims as idioits (not a sin deserving of death or serious injury) forget that innocent bystanders also suffer.
Kids today are too damn fat which is why they can't jump on board Had a great 4th, though the salute to our troops should have included some free beer for us
Most of us have done some really stupid things in our life, especially in our late teens/early twenties.
Just to be a troublemaker I thought I'd mention that the first person who managed to drown himself in our stretch of the Rio Grande this year was in the Air Force and rafting incredibly high water without the help of a professional... so I'm thinking that if we can just keep the military away from boating, all will be well.
