Not only was PoCM the greatest name ever, it was unquestionably the best MLS 'zine ever. And that's no knock on the Emerald City Gazette, which was excellent too. I think those two were clearly the benchmarks. Having attempted my own, I have an immeasurable respect for what Keeley/Hill/Whitney/Foley etc accomplished with PoCM and what Andy Mead and company accomplished with ECG. It is such an immense undertaking, especially if you want it to be any good.
I've kept the same one. But I was using it on the NA-Soccer mailing list and rec.sport.soccer.na or whatever it was before that (as it bears a relationship to my e-mail address). I eventually left as it was too big to keep up with, even with the digest version. Both of those predated the Crew, however (as well as Matchnight and BS). I think the Good Perfessor is still active with Sam's Army but I've not heard from most of those folks in many, many a year. Used to really enjoy Moira's Celtic match reports always starting with her "cuppa tea". That and the "Guide to England's Public Toilets", which was a visitor's guide to stadia in the U.K.
Nope. kgilbert78 then and now. At least as far as MN went. I no longer recall what I used on either NA-Soccer or rec.sport.soccer.na, except I was in at the start on both of them--but I likely used some form of kgilbert (a work e-mail may have been my first e-mail address). Twas a long time ago. But I was into some of the net stuff early as I had a buddy working at the ARPA lab at tOSU....
This is the stuff that needs to be documented for posterity. Time will eat up this kind of history and it will be lost forever.
Wait, Bill Archer is a real person? I always thought he was an internet creation. Sort of the Crew version of Max Headroom
Bill Archer is a real person. I met him for the first time in the lobby of the hotel in Carson on the morning of the Cup. Many other Crew fans, even ones on this board, were milling about in the lobby before heading to the HDC when he came over and introduced himself. And no, he's not Gary Greene.
Yeah I knew Bill stayed in the same hotel but I did not get to meet him unfortunately. I just like to bust Garyn's balls about that. They are good people.
I will always regret that my one meeting with Bill Archer did not turn into more. At the 2009 awards ceremony, Vadim Karillov, then then Crew's goalkeeper coach, came over to my book signing table and asked if I knew Bill Archer. I explained that I had emailed with Bill on countless occasions, but had never met him in person. Vadim said, "He is a good writer. His articles are very interesting. I would like to meet him some day." I said me too. Fast forward to August of 2010, when the Crew played in Philly. Bill was going to be there, and I was going to meet Bill, so I told Vadim I would try to bring Bill by after the game so he could meet him. Vadim was pretty excited. I did get to meet and chat with Bill for a few minutes before the game, but he did not show up at the locker room afterward. I had to tell Vadim that I met Bill, but that he wasn't around after the game. Vadim's response: "He is mysterious, like KGB." Just about pissed myself.
It's been a year or two or three, but I remember a game in the Nordecke where we had people convinced Walt Wheeler was Bill Archer.
Anybody remember when Bill called in to those Hosers podcast up north, and they claimed that how they showed up Bill but all they did was to show that they were the jerks.
Maybe it's a two-person deal. The "in-public" Bill Archer is a different one from the one we think we know. Possible suspects: Gary Greene, KGB, person HHM met, Walt Wheeler. Anyone remember how joeyinfo was several different people all at the same time?
From the wikipedia page on "Storage Wars": As Dave Barry says, "I am not making this up". Only looked there as I heard one of the characters on the show had died, and I did not remember who he was.
