I think the Galaxy have played 11 non-league games already this year. And they have two games coming up in Australia and New Zealand in December. Most of theirs are friendlies while most of DC's are part of tournaments but still 13 games. FC Dallas will be playing their 12th non-league game in the Open Cup final next week. About half and half friendlies and tournaments. Not sure about anyone else.
I think the real issue is how many non-league games they are playing that actually COUNT for something. Friendlies are just that .......... friendlies. Lower intensity, more subs, usually less starters in the game to begin with. DC is playing a bunch of non-league games that are meaningful, and require more intensity, more concentration and more energy.
Agreed. The original post included friendlies to get to 12 so I totaled all the games for the other teams. DC's 11 non-league tournament games might be the most ever. Houston has had 9 this year and would have had 11 except for the particular tie-breaker used in the CCC.
I think you can cross that bridge when you get there. I however have to say that I do like how Houston is developing a good rivalry with Pachuca and I'm sure DC United is going to have one with Chivas.
The record for most games in one season (not counting friendlies) is 44, held by 1997 DC and 2000 Chicago. Already, this year's DC team is guaranteed to have at least 43 including 2 playoff games.
