It was done because of things just like this ongoing conversation. Certain referees (and FAs) refused to bend and apply some practical refereeing and football understanding. That's also why the handball law has gotten so persnickety. Because some people/groups/what-have-you refuse to apply "common sense" unless it's written down.
I’ve seen it both in person as the referee and I watched a video of it happening in some pro league. I’m not sure why the keeper making a mistake somehow makes them eligible to then handle the ball. Why would it be cheap goal? If they weren’t allowed to play it that way under pressure before the mistake why would they after the mistake. That seems to be doubly punishing the team that pressured the keeper.
It’s certainly an interest double standard to think the one is a cheap goal but if the attacker sticks out a leg while the keeper is trying to throw the ball back out onto the field that’s brilliant play from the attacker an the keeper is foolish.
I think everyone has been doing that. Except for the players that yelled for literally every time the ball that touched the hand after 1 week of EPL.
Pretty sure I called it back when this law was changed that defenders could simply boop then ball at the attackers arms and effectively nullify a goal situation. Jusy saying... lol
Really? You think the defender was trying to bounce that off the attackers arm? I don't think it's even close to that--he's trying to get the ball away, which is a much smarter strategy than hoping you can hit an arm.
Probably not. The post was somewhat in jest, hence the “lol”. But it does almost look that way. Denying a goal for what happens here illustrates the sheer lunacy of this change.
The question of why comes to mind. Seriously. Another example that might prove I have no clue what handling is anymore.
So... this is where we are. So accidental handling by yourself will still be called if you score or great a goalscoring opportunity but not if it bounces off your hand and goes to your teammate. Update from IFAB on handball law:“Accidental handball that leads to a team-mate scoring a goal or having a goal-scoring opportunity will no longer be considered an offence.” pic.twitter.com/ruB6PM9L2j— Simon Collings (@sr_collings) March 5, 2021
I agree, although I do not think changing the interpretation midseason is the best way to go about it. Granted it is not super clear to me if it is indeed changing right now, but from the wording of that statement I think it is?
Based on what they are doing right now I’m not sure I’d be clear that it was a change even after it’s printed in the book.
All these changes make me glad I have retired from reffing. My head would hurt worse than my knee does.
