    The two cryptic ones...
The Miracle of Castel Di Sangrio
    Fever Pitch
(they were part of the "soccer book" rush that hit right before the World Cup)

And that's a YES for me on Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Wow. Didn't expect to see this when I log on mid-vacation (aren't cybercafes great?)

Yes on Uncle Tom's Cabin. Nearly contracted a case of adult-onset diabetes from some of the scenes.

I was wondering if this thread would somehow rise phoenix-like from the ashes of the BS crash, and here it is. It's good to see it back.

Well, as we all straggle back in from recess, Round Six is ready to begin. I feel like I had a couple good ones lined up way back in April before the break, but I have no idea what they were. So here goes, a pretty high brow one in the hopes that the "Ulysses" and "War & Peace" magic can strike again. Didn't they score big?

    Remembrance of Things Past
    -Marcel Proust

Need to read it, actually, as I'm working on "memory" and "narrative" right now, but have never gotten around to this one.

Someone please explain. This looks interesting, but I'm not sure how to play. Throw out a title and see if people have read it?

    Uncle Tom's Cabin-yes
    Proust-only part

    Gravity's Rainbow, anyone?

I've read "Swann's Way," but not the rest. Does that count?

Has anybody read Larry McMurtry's "Duane's Depressed" where Duane is ordered by his psychologist to read "Remembrance of Things Past." It takes him two years.

Unfortunately, I have yet to read ANY McMurtry. Or maybe that's fortunate, since I suspect I'm going to enjoy him greatly when I do get around to it. Anyway, I saw the film, "Swann in Love" with Jeremy Irons...not sure if that is the same section or not.

Pretty much on the spot, irvine. It's a game based on a scene in David Lodge's novel, "Changing Places." A bunch of English profs at a dinner party play it and the point is that you score by naming a book you "should have read, but haven't." So you have to embarrass yourself in order to win. This puts one competitive young Shakespearian scholar in a bind, as he decides to go for victory by admiting he has never actualy read "Hamlet," the subject of his already published dissertation. Career suicide, but he won the game.

So we've been playing by turn. Whever, someone joins late, we've just let them go ahead and respond to the whole list to this point, and then offer up their own books for us to repsond to. For space reasons, I've abbreviated the names of the books in that list, so leave any blank if you are not sure what it is, and I'll let you know them afterwards.

Not knowing the rules, I screwed up. I have read Gravity's Rainbow, so strike that. (It's a great book, by the way.)

So I guess my first contribution will be, hmmm, I hate to admit this, but:

    the Iliad

I've read the Odyssey, but never got around to the other one.

    Re: Re: Hamlet

Excellent codebreaking skills to narrow the list down so much, irvine! The remaining ones are:
    War and Peace
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
    Death of a Salesman
The Alchemist (our only 0 pointer so far...doesn't seem that will change!)
    Portrait of an Artist
The Miracle of Castel di Sangrio (soccer book)

As far as yours, "The Good Soldier" is a YES for me. [What is the "Svejk" part? Do I have the correct book?] Loved it, especially the way Ford crafts the first person narration, which reminded me a bit of "Remains of the Day." (or vice versa, rather) Two narrators totally out of touch with the stories they are narrating, and so are left "out of" the joke.

Also, while you're at it, maybe you should give us a couple more, since we've all used up 5 books each by now. Have four more holes in your canon?

    But

    The Good Soldier Svejk-No.

    Re: Re: Re: Hamlet

    Okay:

    War and Peace: N
    Harry Potter: N
    Death of a Salesman: Y
    Alchemist: N
    Portrait of an Artist: Y
    Castel di Sangro: Y

And I didn't mean Ford's (or actually Huber's) novel, which as you say is very skilfully crafted. I'm talking about Jaroslav Hasek's WWI satire. Both Great War books, but they could hardly be more different (I'm cheating on the game and reading the Hasek right now).

    So, let's see, four more...

    Finnegans Wake
    The Tale of Genji
    Stranger in a Strange Land
    The Name of the Rose
