It's not quite as bleak for Australia as one might think.

    Ghana 4 points +1 GD (1-0 SRB, 1-1 AUS)
    Germany 3 points +2 GD (4-1 AUS, 0-1 SRB)
Serbia 3 points Even (0-1 GHA, 1-0 GER)
    Australia 1 point -4 GD (0-4 GER, 1-1 GHA)

    Ghana-Germany
    Serbia-Australia

GHA and SRB win: Ghana first, Serbia second. Outright.

GHA wins, SRB-AUS draw: Ghana first, Serbia second. Outright.

GHA and AUS win: Ghana first, Australia second. Outright.

GHA-GER draw, SRB wins: Serbia first, Ghana second. Outright.

Both matches draw: Ghana first, Germany second. Germany over Serbia
    on GD.

GHA-GER draw, AUS wins: Ghana first, Germany second -- unless someone
actually believes Australia can beat any soccer team in the world by
    seven clear goals.

GER and SRB win: They both qualify. Serbia would need to win by at
least two more goals than Germany does, or by one more goal and score
at least two more, to win the group. Germany first, Serbia second in
    the more likely scenario.

GER win, AUS-SRB draw: Germany first, Ghana second (as long as Serbia
don't score two more than Ghana does and as long as Germany doesn't
win by more than one goal -- Serbia gets through otherwise.)

GER win, AUS win: Germany first, Ghana second unless Australia win by
about six (combined GD of the two matches).

Interesting, if Ghana can pull a draw and Serbia wins over Australia, then Germany is out.

Definitely Germany-Ghana is gonna be the match i'll watch...

It still looks pretty bleak for Australia. If they simply kept the goal differential down vs. Germany and then somehow got a win against Ghana they'd be almost a lock.

2 days ago who would have thought that Serbia would have the best chances of advancing going into the last matchday?

    Crazy group.

Whoa... where did all those posts go? I deleted them.

Guys, to put it plainly, STFU about how Australia was/wasn't robbed in every damn thread. I'm Australian, and I'm sick of reading about it. There's several post-game threads where you can discuss it ad nauseum.

This is about possibilities for upcoming results. Let's keep it that way.

No matter how you look at it Germany's chances of beating Ghana are way higher than Serbia's are of beating Australia. Ghana only need a draw in their game and have a superior head to head over Serbia. Serbia simply does not have the best chance to advance - Ghana's and Germany's chances are better.

What if Germany wins Ghana 2-0 and Serbia draws with Australia?

That is a gamble. I wouldn't put my hope on that scenario.

Head to head doesn't matter it's all about goal difference. Serbia is a better team than Australia and should win, people predicting that Australia will score 3 goals on Serbia's world class defense are delusional and in for a rude awakening.

Ghana has it extremely hard because they have to play a pissed of Germany who will come at them with everything, plus they have shown all tournament that their offense is nonexistent.

@Starcade: Germany beat Australia 4:0, not 4:1. Thus Germanys goal difference is +3, and some of your szenarios have to be slightly adjusted. (If Ger and Srb win, Srb has to win by 3 goals more than Germany to finish 1st)

Oh *bonk* *thud* etc. etc. etc.

Yeah, that just makes it one more goal in Germany's favor in all goal-difference scenarios.

Well im gonna say the Germans are going to win 80% of the time, draw 15% of the time and lose 5% of the time against ghana.

with that in mind, i believe the final position will be decided by the Serbia Aus Game.

    Serbia Win = Germany, Serbia
Australia Win = Germany, Ghana/Australia depending on goal difference
    Draw = Germany, Ghana.

The game is gonna be a cracker, both teams need to win and dont take anything away with a draw. im picturing a 0-0-10 formation from both teams in the last 5 minutes if there is no goals lol.

I agree the Serbia-Australia game will decide the outcome of the group and will be a tough one!

Best scenario for Serbia will be if they finish second in the group (beat Australia, but Germany also beat Ghana), Slovenia be first in group C and England second and then in the 1/16 round Serbia play against Slovenia and Germany against England or USA :)

The two teams to make it through this Group D should also win their next game against the top two from Group C anyway. I don't think it matters too much whether you finish 1st or 2nd as Group C have been rubbish.

That's a big call. It's not like any of the teams bar maybe Germany have been that impressive in this group either.

I just have the impression that the teams in Group D are playing for survival first as it is so tight. The ridiculous cards given out haven't helped the Group to shine as much as it should.

I just see Group C as not having enough to break down the top Group D teams. 3 of the 7 goals scored in Group C have been basic keeper mistakes.

Serbia has to win by a margin four greater than Germany's margin or a margin of three greater AND score four more goals otherwise germany is first.

If Australia win 4-0 and Germany win 1-0 then both teams will be on 0 GD and Australia will go through on Goals scored.

For Australia to win by 4-0 and Ghana still go through despite losing, Ghana needs to score 3 goals to make a coin toss or more to go through. Of course having both of those two scorelines is getting pretty unlikely.
