Ok I’d looked at the article but there’s a big ad in the middle they I thought was the end of the article.

I’ve seen too many news articles that deceive the reader by using phrases like “as many as.” It’s always the biggest number the researcher can come up with; otherwise there would be another number that would be “as many as.” That phrase is one of the main ones I use to detect a journo whose intent is to mislead. It’s a tool for anti-journalists.

Drug possession, fighting, any crime that resulted in pleading/found guilty is what they tried to cover.

How accurate that is, give or take a few percentages it may not be far off.

The fact check point is that there is nothing that indicates 15% and it could be as high as 41% depending on how you measure it.

So the Texas LGov is full of shit.

 

Three points--
1. In this construction "as many as" isn't any more real than "way fewer than" would be. It is an active/passive distinction rather than a serious number.
2. "Residents" are not necessarily US criminals or even US population.
3. The "adult population" is not "all Americans."

The number is pointless and useless-- it is a closet monster and the post a fear tactic.

I got yelled at by a cop for Jaywalking in DC once. I’ve gotten away with dozens of public urinations. And counting. But never in DC.

While I don’t disagree on the misleading magnitude of the number, it’s also worth noting that the US has the largest carceral population in the world and that some “conducts”, like drug addiction and homelessness have been treated as crimes for about 50 years.

 

"Police say the bag he was carrying may have contained cocaine." Yeah, it also may have contained a severed head, or a wet towel and sweaty gym clothes or a book from the lie-berry or anything else...

Is George Santos stupid? (Don't answer, it's a rhetorical question) I know his latest thing is to do cameos for people, wishing them a happy birthday, etc. But he really didn't know what NAMBLA is, and why it wouldn't be a good idea (especially for a gay man with a dubious past) to be praising them?

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) said he is “beside himself” over Speaker Mike Johnson fundraising for Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) ahead of his primary runoff next month, Punchbowl News reports.

Said Roy: “I’m being attacked. Conservatives are being attacked. Bob Good, the chairman of the Freedom Caucus, is being attacked by Tony. He said he was a Klansman. I cannot tolerate what’s happening to the people that I think are standing up for this country.”

 

Who said who was a Klansman? If they have "R-TX" after their name there's a good chance that it's all of them.

And this may be the real reason Johnson brought the bills to the floor. Jeffries has been working behind the scenes to "whip" Republicans into signing the discharge motion for the Senate bill and wouldn't have saved Johnson from the lunatic fringe of Republicans.

This is especially true if several Republicans were going to resign immediately and/or vote for Jeffries as Speaker if MTG triggered the vote on removing Johnson.

This couldn't work because if there was one consensus about Kevin on both sides of congress it was that he couldn't keep his word. You can't make a deal with someone like that.
