    As expected, the Impeachment failed.

In a press conference after the trial, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he felt "very strongly that we had to set a precedent that impeachment should never be used to settle policy disagreements."

He said the Senate had to ward against partisan impeachments.

"If we allowed that to happen, it would set a disastrous precedent for Congress," he said. "Anytime the House would want to just shut the Senate down, they could send over another impeachment resolution."

Ousting Johnson? "Tubby" is going to take a crack at it.

    https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/18/politics/mike-johnson-speakership-rules/index.html

Tensions were running high in the House on Thursday morning. At one point, Johnson was surrounded on the House floor by a number of far-right lawmakers in a heated discussion. Johnson was essentially pinned against the back wall of the House floor with members on all sides of him, with the speaker constantly pivoting his head as he responded to members speaking to him.

The group implored Johnson to give them assurances that he would not raise the threshold on the motion to vacate, and the speaker would not commit, leaving many of the lawmakers fuming and some even saying this was their red line that could propel the motion to oust him forward.

“We notified him that any effort to change the threshold of motion to vacate would likely induce the motion to vacate,” GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz, who participated in the conversation, told CNN.

GOP Rep. Derrick Van Orden entered the 20-minute heated floor conversation as it was ongoing and dared his right-wing colleagues to move on the motion to oust Johnson, even calling Gaetz “tubby.”

Also, I think the Biden administration laid out to him clearly what was going to happen if he continued to try and scuttle the USPS, and he began to play ball instead of playing wreck-it-ralph.

So @American Brummie 's sicko dream has come true, in a roundabout way

MAGA mike is now effectively coalition leader, depending on dem votes not just to get his legislation out of rules and on to the floor, but for his actual job.

    Good column from Greg

Mike Johnson’s Shockingly Pro-Ukraine Speech Really Sticks It to MAGA
The House speaker’s comments wrecked one of the far right’s most ridiculous, reprehensible tropes.
“I really do believe the intel and the briefings that we’ve gotten,” Johnson said, in a moment that became a mini-speech. “I think that Vladimir Putin would continue to march through Europe if he were allowed. I think he might go to the Balkans next. I think he might have a showdown with Poland, or one of our NATO allies.” If so, he added, we might find ourselves sending troops to defend allies from Putin later.

Did we really hear the speaker say that he believes what our intelligence services have told him about the long-term consequences of cutting off aid to Ukraine?

This is a direct challenge to the MAGA worldview in multiple ways. Johnson is treating Putin as the aggressor in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and acknowledging his broader imperialist designs, which is heresy to some MAGA Republicans. But he’s also flatly declaring that on these matters, the deep state is very much to be believed.

Last I came across him, he was reviewing movies for the libertarian Reason magazine. Pretty well, unsurprisingly.

One of the first rock critics whom I knew by name because I valued his perspective. Still remember getting the second Meat Puppets album on his recommendation.
