surprise no one started this one! Looks like both opening nights where great, lots of arses in those seats any official Numbers?
I was surprised that the attendance in Miami was less than 18,000. I watched both games on TV and it definitely didn't sound like there were 55,000 empty seats. The atmosphere seemed amazing.
HDC seemed packed when i was there yesterday. I thought it was a sellout compared to Galaxy games I attend
All I know is that it was about 15,000 Salvadorans in the Home Depot. If it wasnt bc of us, the home depot would be alone with Guate, Trinidad and the USA. Most people in the stands had a blue flag or a blue shirt. EL SALVADOR PUM PUM PUM!
I guess you could find official match reports to get an idea. Wikipedia doesn't have any attendance numbers for any Gold Cup before this one. ussoccer.com says the US averaged about 15,500 for its group matches in Seattle/Boston last year and 19,000 for its group matches in Boston in 2003 (33,652 for El Salvador; 8,780 for Martinique; 15,627 for Cuba).
There's a (pretty ugly) thread about the poor US turnout in LA in the US Men's Forum. As someone pointed out in the thread, there's so much soccer in LA, that US fans have gotten complacent. It seems like southern California gets at least one national team match every winter.
Here are the attendance figures from 2005: Miami (3 games with Colombia, Panama, Honduras, Trinidad & Tobago) 10,311 17,292 11,000 Seattle (2 games with Cuba, Costa Rica, USA, Canada) 15,831 15,109 Last match of the group was in Foxboro with 15,211 watching. Group C had South Africa, Jamaica, Guatemala, Mexico spread out over 3 venues. Home Depot Center 27,000 Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum 30,710 Houston (Reliant Stadium) 45,311 Quarterfinals at Foxboro 22,108 (USA vs. Jamaica and Honduras vs. Costa Rica) and Houston 60,050 (Mexico vs. Colombia and South Africa vs. Panama) Semifinals at the Meadowlands had 41,721 Finals at the Meadowlands (USA vs. Panama) had 31,018
Mexican crown in NY and 20,240 in NY for Mexico mostly for mexico. http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news;_y...JYmw7YF?slug=ap-mexico-cuba&prov=ap&type=lgns Also it is good to see the c American countries bring a good crowd however Guatemala fans seemed to outnumber usa supporters in our own national training center.
So it looks like this year is doing better than the last tournament from the opening matches at least.
Any word on the attendance for Saturday's matches? I saw the U.S.-T & T game on FSC, and it looked like the HDC was packed. What about the Orange Bowl? I read accounts of the matches on the Miami Herald and LA Times websites, but neither one mentioned the attendance. Thanks in advance to anyone who attended in person, if they know.
Wikipedia says 27,000 for LA and 25,000 for Miami. What a difference a weekend makes. I can't wait to see how Giants Stadium improves today.
Re: Mexican crown in NY and Looks like more than 20,000 in Giants Stadium today. I don't get it. The semifinals in 2005 drew 41,000+ to Giants Stadium during the week and the final drew 31,000+ on a Sunday afternoon. It looks like today's attendance could be at least 70,000. I know today's weather is perfect (and the final was at the end of July in 2005), but is that (plus Mexico's presence) the reason for attendance to be more than double what it was for the final in 2005?
It looked like the only empty seats were at the top level behind one of the goals, but it seems like the filled up by the end of the match. I'm starting to feel my the estimate of 70,000 might be a little low.
not official but even split of about 5ok Giants Stadium crowd of more than 50,000 -- evenly split between Mexican and Honduran fans. link http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news;_y...=ap-goldcup-honduras-mexico&prov=ap&type=lgns
Re: Mexican crown in NY and Mexico's presence had some to do with it. However, I believe it was mainly Honduras' presence. We do not get to see the team play official games in the US much, as we tend to get booted early out of the WC qualifiers and miss the Hex. So when the team plays here, specially in immigrant-populated areas, the fans jump at the opportunity.
Re: Mexican crown in NY and 50,000+ just seems really low for how full the stadium looked. I found this picture from the 2005 Gold Cup semifinal where 41,000+ watched the US and Honduras and it seems like the upper level is pretty much empty. http://www.internationalsportsimage...rient=&sort=&sortorder=&numperpage=&imagepos= I could be way off though, I was at the US-Latvia match last year and I didn't expect the official attendance to be the 24,000+ that it actually was.
Re: Mexican crown in NY and I don't think the US-Panama matchup for the final was much of a draw. Who played in that semi final?
