http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/08/AR2005070801770.html United Notes: Forward Alecko Eskandarian (strained neck, concussion) will miss his third straight game. . . . Defender Bryan Namoff (groin/abdominal injury) underwent surgery in Germany and will be sidelined three to four weeks. . . . D.C.'s Ben Olsen and Santino Quaranta and Kansas City's Josh Wolff and Jimmy Conrad are with the U.S. national team at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Wizards are also without midfielder Khari Stephenson (Jamaica). . . . Nelsen, on vacation from his English club, Blackburn Rovers, has been practicing with United. Perhaps Nellie is schooling Boswell on the finer points of being a top center-back in MLS.
You know, there is a sign that that guy really liked it here at United. Class guy and couldnt be nicer to fans etc...glad that he is getting all the fame he deserves over in England.
What's the status of Ryan's visa? Is this a guy keeping the bridges open for a fall back position? Mark
NZ is a Commonwealth nation, and I believe Nellie just renewed his contract? At any rate, he's secure at Rovers.
Thanks nancyb. Continued success to Ryan in the Prem.. Class guy to hang out at United and I really hope Boz learns well from him. Mark
Two thoughts: 1) There is no f@#$ing way that Rovers are letting go of their Captain. If a guy waltzes into the team and takes it over to the point of legitimately deserving the armband, well, the HO needs to extract its apex from its rectal orifice on the best of days, but this would be an embuggerance passing normal stupidity into the bounds of ... Words fail me. We're talking WMD-wrong here. 2) I have exactly NO words of criticism for Nicky in this space. He's done precisely what I asked of him: Don't screw up. My biggest complaint about Nick has been the old flap-o-rama move that he pulls out of his arse at the worst of moments. He has almost, if not completely, failed to do so since the Stokes-assisted catastrophe at Harbor View. The gaffe against KC was partially explained by a possible trip over an inconveniently placed opponent's boot, but other than that his play has been spectacularly unworthy of notice in the glaringly hideous mistake column. What more can you ask of a chronically undersized keeper? The occasional wonderful save? Done. Good vision and distribution? Better. The ability to crank the ball to a teammate 50-odd yards down-pitch, instead of the 71st row opposite your own six-yard-box (completely unlike a certain consensus starting National Team goalkeeper, I might add)? Done and done. I'll be the first to criticise Nick when he fouls up. Actually, I'm usually the first to call for his lynching from the nearest convenient tree when he fouls up, but that aside, he really hasn't given me any excuses. That's worthy of recognition, and I'm glad Mr. Goff saw fit to recognize it. Keep playing well, Nick!
Breakthrough journalism by Goff. Here I thought his keyboard only had the letters A, D and U and he actually cranks out a piece without once making mention of Freddie. A first??? Of course he'll probably have to buy his own food in the pressbox tonite but but he can hold his head high. Way to go Steven.
I'd hoped so too, but since Blackburn is already in training and the BRFCS boards say that he had to be either in the US or NZ to pick up his newly granted work permit papers (a bit odd, don't you think?), my guess is that he's gone back to England by now.
It's "Freddy" not "Freddie". There is a charge for the food in the press box. The Washington Post and it's staffers don't accept freebies for ethical reasons. Even when U.S.S.F. offers select media room on team charters, the Post pays for Steve to fly to avoid any conflict of interest.
Status as a commonwealth nation does not grant automatic work status. They have to go through the hoops just like everyone else. Granted its a lot easier for a Kiwi than a Yank because of the closer bonds with the mother country but nothing is certain.
That confused me, too. Thanks for the clarification. I thought that Commonwealth residents had an unfettered right to live and work in England. Did it use to be that way?
Not that it's really relevant to your point but that's new this year. And I believe that the charge is something like $5.
So I'm guessing you never actually read his stuff. Because if you did, you would not have posted this dreck.
