Question for older person with good knowledge of rugby union rules:

Okay, I consider myself decently knowledgeable on rugby, but I'm only in my 20's. From my understanding, this rule was eliminated in the 70's. Could someone explain to me how it was scored?

Right now a mark must be taken from inside your own 22. Was this the case when you could score a goal from mark? Wouldn't that be a very hard goal to score (ie almost impossible)?
