Grit and determination certainly played a part, zaq but the manager was the one who selected the team , trained the team and ultimately decided tactics , like it or not.

Houllier put together a very decent squad which proved itself capable of winning the treble . And never forget from that same squad came the core of the side which won the CL in Istanbul. Respect.

We have gone far off from singing the praises of Bobby.

I know we have to keep threads on topic but during international breaks and off season etc I don't mind reading a few comments which go off track . It can get quite quiet in here at times.

Agreed - but we had gone so far away from Firmino (thanks as usual to Zaq) - that I was just trying to bring it back to him more or less.

Still say Bobby is the closest we’ve had to a Dalglish since the king retired.

    1. You already have. Post 263.
    2. Firmino is a better player in his role than Litmanen.

If only we could spend 28M more to buy another just like him.

In both their primes I'd still take Litmanen.

Each to his own. I rate Litmanen among the 25 best players I've ever seen.

Litmanaen was only ever a bit player for us; his star had waned significantly when we signed him.

    We're seeing peak Bobby.

I know all that. I was comparing them as players. Litmanen hadn't waned quite that much when he joined us btw - he did get injured and break his hand or something, but if you look at his highlights reel with us he still looked like an awesome player when he was playing. He should have been a regular starter that season, and probably would have been, fitness permitting.

One thing I would say as my opinion is that Litmanen would be more useful to a non-great side than Bobby (I think). Same kind of way I think a Steven Gerrard would be more useful to an average side than Paul Scholes would be.

Well, I suppose you could say that Firmino is a better player in hi srole than Paltini, Zico or Baggio also... it's possible. He's playing a fantastic role. I just think that Litmanen could play as well and better in more roles, I suppose ... is all I mean ....

who knows ... I'm not in either of their bloodstreams. ;)
