No a photo but here is Paul Gardner mentioning Best in his weekly column... New FA Chairman, same old stuck-in mentality - Soccer America
(and following up two years later) Really? Despite the fact he was an previous European Player of the year in one of the finest teams ever? That's interesting. And if true, possibly a good indication why NASL failed and why MLS will succeed. The current generation of hardcore match going supporters are quite savvy in my ever so humble opinion. When I was a young lad in Dublin I remember watching that goal on an official George Best autobiographical VCR release in the mid eighties, and in the midst of a lot of Man United footage it was set up as a centerpiece of the show. Little did I know where I'd end up thirty odd years later... I pinged my childhood friend the other day and he remembers the goal too. I'd suggest most people with a passing interest in Best's career have seen it at least once. We should milk it for all it's worth.
There are so many reasons on why the old league failed that its very difficult to pinpoint one in particular. I've said it before and I'll continue to post it, for as much as NASL failed, if it weren't for that league, MLS will have never existed and that is a fact! Can't get tired of posting this.... Here you go!
