NASL Not in the Hall of Fame: English league bad-boy George Best was the original marquee target of the New York Cosmos in 1975, but backed out of the deal at last minute and Pelé was signed instead. But Best agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Aztecs in 1976, and resurrected his career brilliantly in the NASL, posting 27 goals and 26 assists in 3 seasons that brought Hollywood sensibility to the sport. Best played 4 more seasons with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers (1978-79) and San Jose Earthquakes (1980-81), earned 4 all-NASL selections, tied the league record with 18 assists in 1977, and finished as the NASL's 23rd all-time leading scorer. Best also bagged the goal many consider the best in NASL history in 1981, dribbling through a dizzying maze of Fort Lauderdale defenders to singlehandedly score. But although nominated by the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame Veterans Committee in 2009, Best never received more than 43.75 percent of the vote and fell off the ballot 2 years later.
