USL League Two will begin their big pushes starting any day now. The way it looks, there will be roughly 20 new USL2 teams in 2023: Academica SC (Turlock, CA - former NPSL) Boulder County United (Lafayette, CO - new club) Brevard SC (Melbourne, FL - new club) Capo FC (San Juan Capistrano, CA - new club) FC Carolinas (Waxhaw, NC - new club) Rochester FC (Rochester, MN - former UPSL) St. Charles FC (St. Charles, MO - new club) North Alabama SC (Huntsville, AL - former NPSL) United PDX (Portland, OR - new club) FC Tucson (Tucson, AZ - former USL1) Sarasota Paradise (Sarasota, FL - new club) Redlands FC (Redlands, CA - new club) Virginia Marauders FC (Winchester, VA - new club) Arizona Arsenal SC (Mesa, AZ - new club) More set to announce.
St. Charles FC isn't technically new. They're basically the rebranded St. Louis Lions. Correct. The St Louis Lions will be transitioning into Saint Charles FC at the conclusion of the current season.— St. Charles 2020 Football Club (@Stc2020FC) June 14, 2022
I missed that one. Probably is a new club though, they possibly bought the rights to the St. Louis Lions' USL2 franchise. Doesn't really look like anything from the Lions continues to exist. New ownership (it appears?). New coaches. New location. New apparel. New social media. New website. 20 minutes away from the Lions' facility. A "rebrand" is very generous for this club. Even USL2 plugs it as a new club. It is an interesting inclusion of a club that went bankrupt, was that the Lions? Sad, if so.
Looks like a year and a half ago the youth club TG Lions and St. Charles FC partnered so this seems to be an extension of that maybe. https://www.tonyglavin.com/news/tg-lions-academy-st-charles-fc-partner

Division alignment is out. I haven't looked at all the teams that are gone, but one is Kaw Valley in the KC metro. https://www.uslleaguetwo.com/news_article/show/1259606
Buzz, you think Kaw Valley's absence is just the direction of MLS affiliated clubs moving away from the USL "pyramid"?
Maybe, but I don't think so. While there was some association with SKC, I don't think it was such that the relationship between MLS and USL affected this.
How about a catch-all (will try to not miss!) on USL2 sides gone for 2023: St. Louis Lions (St. Charles FC takeover) Chicago FC United Kaw Valley FC OVF Alliance Central Valley Fuego FC Golden State Force Commonwealth Cardinals FC One Knoxville SC (USL1 move) South Georgia Tormenta FC 2 Tri-Cities Otters Peachtree City MOBA Caledonia SC FC Florida U23 Brazos Valley Cavalry FC (rebranded? to Twin City Toucans...possibly) That is 13 clubs out, with one question mark.
Fuego used to be Fresno Fuego, right? That would be sad. They'd been around a VERY long time. And I though Brazos Valley was going to be in the Open Cup...?
They are, at least what we see and know. That is why a "rebrand" is possible for them. Brazos Valley is not listed on the divisional structure, but they are in USOC. So, that could potentially mean they've rebranded. The Toucans have not been announced by USL2 yet.
Chicago FC United is no longer in USL2? Did it have to make a choice between MLS Next and USL2? It was neat that it had both.
MLS Next and USL2 are different programming - MLS Next is for youth and USL2 is "pre-professional" (i.e. adult amateur).
I get that, but it seems odd to me that a club that had both, and was unique in the Chicagoland area in that way, suddenly drops its USL2 team. For awhile I was wondering if they were going to have both an MLS academy and a USL academy.
