And the thing is (as we all know) there have been a lot of folks who have done that long after it became apparent it wasn't going to work. That's why it's kinda different to see someone bail quickly. And I agree, someone either mis-spoke or misinterpreted on the $6M thing, that made no sense. (If employees were dropping and not being replaced by mid-summer, that would have been a sign. Sometimes we hear about those signs, this time we did not.)
Just the simple thing of switching from soccer-baseball would cost $12,000-15,000! For 14 home games, that's a $168,000-210,000 expense. Add in the switch back to baseball and that's up to $420,000 in expenses just for the facility. How could anyone think that is doable? Making up just that expense is a terrible thing for the budget.
My sense from one article from last year was that at least part of that was the city's contribution to the cause. Because they thought having a third division soccer team would be beneficial to the downtown. Because actual economists rarely hold public office.
They don't even have to run, I guess. But elected officials should maybe listen to them once in a while, especially considering there is a mountain of evidence that public investment in sports facilities doesn't do nearly as much good as said electeds want the populace to believe.
You don't have to be an economist to know that a 3rd division team is not going to benefit downtown much.
