According to: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/2632217.stm Quote>>> Maltese outift Marsaxlokk have announced the former England international is to fly out to the Mediterranean island on Tuesday to discuss a possible move. <<< Also, look at the list of clubs he's paraded in front of: >>> Clubs linked with Gazza: DC United (USA) Queen of the South: Dundee Auckland Kingz (NZ) Exeter City Morpeth Northampton Gillingham Leeds Utd <<< Come back, Gazza! Come back! -G. Rex
You don't get much lower than the Malta league, but you don't get a much cooler place to live than Malta! I spent a week there (saw the Malta v. Denmark WCQ while I was there!) and very, very much want to go back -- soon! (the info below is waaay more than you want to know about Malta, but I'll use any excuse to go poking around Maltese websites!). There are "doubts" about the move, says a story at maltafootball.com (they say that Sky is reporting that Gazza snubbed their offer -- also, we rate a mention on the list of clubs he tried out for): http://www.maltafootball.com/news1.shtml The country is small, so their Premier League basically moves around among three stadia, always playing a double-header at a stadium on a given day: http://www.maltafootball.com/fixtures.shtml National Stadium (in the midst of renovations when I was there in March '01) is quite nice (new photos at bottom): http://www.mfa.com.mt/NationalStadium/stadium.htm Marsaxlokk F.C. is around mid-table at 6-0-9. The club website: http://www.marsaxlokkfc.com/ Marsaxlokk itself is amazingly picturesque (although since they don't play there, and he's not reported to live there, he might never see it!): http://viewmalta.tripod.com/images/marsaxlokk_boats.jpg
Hopefully he signs with them so we can finally hear the end of all the Gazza talk... ...at least for this year.
Maybe FIFA can make up a new tournament that will have all the clubs that Gazza has either played with or been rumored for. It would truly be a Wold Club Cup.
one of my brother in laws refs in europe and does some UEFA and FIFA games (WCQ, Euro qualifiers) and one time called a game in malta and made a "contested call" and had to be surrounded by cops to get off the field.
I am pretty sure that the ticker on Sky Sports News last night said this deal is off. Not sure but I think I saw that.
Sky Sports said it's off, but after that report came out, the club chairman said their offer was still being considered but it was one of three (one from the far east and "possibly" one from Italy) Gazza was considering. http://www.maltafootball.com/news1.shtml
