A two-time Major League Soccer Executive of the Year, Hamilton died aboard a TACA airlines flight after it left San Jose airport Thursday evening, TACA spokeswoman said Sofia Valverde said. "He appeared to have symptoms similar to a heart attack," Valverde said. She said the crew tried to resuscitate him before the pilot returned the plane to San Jose. Hamilton was returning to the United States after the Galaxy played Saprissa of Costa Rica during the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal Wednesday. Hamilton joined the Galaxy four seasons ago after spending two years as executive vice president and GM of the Miami Fusion. He previously worked for adidas America for six years. He graduated from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Hamilton is survived by his wife, Paige, and a 5-year-old son.
That's too bad, only 43 years old. Very tragic. For those attending any sort of service for him should one be held, please pass on the condolences of us American soccer fans living abroad.
Shocking news already to start this morning But Prayers and condolences go to his family and to his Galaxy family and supporters.
This is very tragic to hear. I hope this doesn't dampen the spirits of the Galaxy, they've got alot going for them right now, but again, very tragic. Thoughts and prayers are certainly with Doug's family. Just a note: This is REALLY weird, as just yesterday I was in a discussion about the potential of Alexi Lalas leaving NY and going to the LA front office. The presence of a quality GM keeping that from happening did come up.
If Red Bull has someone they eventually want to put in Alexi's place, this could be the time to phase him in. Have Alexi show the new guy the ropes for the next two months; then move Alexi out to LA to take over the Galaxy.
