I'm saying this jokingly because I'm sure this little techincality has been covered but can't we just go out and offer the top 20 players in the world (positions spread to cover the field of course) something like $50K a year and then have AEG sign them to spoksperson contracts for the Kings where they're all making $25mil/year to do commercials?

Can't this team just spend it's money wisely? How many examples does AEG need? Houston, Columbus, Salt Lake... chriminy, every other team in the league for that matter. The whole "spend huge bucks on two players so we sell a lot of shirts but we'll have a totally crap team because we couldn't afford to pay a three year old" method may sell a lot of shirts but it doesn't win a championship.

Why couldn't they have just hired Beckham to do a modeling gig in a Galaxy shirt and then spent salary cap money on enough players to help us win consistently?

I'm being a fool I know...

 

shenanigans like that were the dirty-little-secret in mls for many years.

then they became the dirty-not-really-secrets anymore when garber & co. made an attempt to keep american talent in the league (landon, johnson, adu, etc...)

then came the designated player rule, which for me was as much about allowing aeg to buy beckham as it was the league trying to "legalize" and gain control over a practice they didn't necessarily condone, but knew were powerless to stop.

This may or may not be a rumor but Telemundo (Channel 52) mentioned tonight (1/11/2009) that Cristian is in fact in talks with the LA Galaxy.
