Anybody know if this is being carried on any type of media outlet live?

espn news hasn't mentioned it yet - only outlet i can think of that would

remember that it's a telephone call - not a press conference per se.

    OK, IMO Best Case Scenario:

Sunil regales us with stories of "what a fine job Bruce has done for soccer in this country," blah, blah, blah.... And Bruce is fired or resigns.

    IMO, Worst-Case Scenario:

Sunil, after having drank too much, and having been in a terrible collision in his car, decides to appoint Bruce Arena coach-for-life. Arena pole-smokers everywhere hold a party.

Unfortunately, I have this sinking feeling that the latter is more likely than the former...

    Gross speculation...

Sunil: "Bruce and I had a really good talk and came to the mutual decision that it would be best for all parties for him to stay with the USSF, but to focus his energy on new goals. We will be begin the search for a new coach as soon as he gets back to LA... I mean soon."

    Speculation is Fun! :D

    I'd say:

    * Chance of Bruce Arena being "fired" - 0%
    * Chance of Bruce Arena stepping down - 80%
    * Chance of Bruce Arena staying - 20%

any significance to it being a phone conference versus an in-person announcement? probably just the short notice / reach most number of reporters and nothing to really infer from it.

Won't happen, but it'd be nice if the call were carried live on ussoccer.com.

It would be even nicer if they carried it on ESPNNews. Seriously, when does anyone think we are going to find out what the heck they said . . .

why do these meetings always happen in airports and tarmacs and stuff? Do they need to find neutral ground so they can protect themselves from each others snipers and gunmen? I picture Gulati and Arena rolling up to each other, dark suits, dakr sunglasses, and hired hands with ear pieces standing there looking mean.

Haven't they ever heard of an office?

Why are they doing a phone conference versus a live press conference? Lack of interest? Budget concerns?

There is usually a Cinnabon or Sabarro at airports for Bruce.

Within 30 minutes of the annoucement. I'm guessing some members of the media will be listening in on the media conference call and will do their media thang promptly.

I'd imagine a press release will be posted on USSoccer.com fairly soon after or simultaneous with the conference call. Will just be missing Q&A and follow up.

Thanks for the laugh!! I really needed that. It does sound odd that this isn't being done in a more "professional" environment though.

U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati has announced that Bruce Arena's contract will not be renewed at the end of 2006. During his eight-year tenure as manager, Arena compiled 71 victories and a .658 winning percentage, both all-time team records. [STORY]

so he remains until december? sounds like things fall into place for getting JK.
a few months go by and JK announces when things have settled down in germany.
