one of the teams my high school played was a town called Auburn, and before they got their name change, they were called the Auburn Daisies. Just imagine the uniforms.
Actually one of my favorite names in all of sport. How can you not want to support a team named Heart of Oak? It makes me think: Stout and strong... a team that plays with heart.
Sponsored name - they cashed in on their success in reaching Europe one year. I assume their fans would still use their original name, Llansanffraid
Japan's Kashima Antlers. Now I know what an antler is, but why would you want to be one? Maybe it's an Asian virility thing, like bear gall bladder or something...
I've got two good HS ones: Hickman High in Columbia, MO ---->The Kewpies - as in Kewpie Dolls you used to win at traveling carivals and state fairs. They even have a giant baby with a curly blonde tuft of hair, wrapped in purple painted on the outside of their gym towards the main through street of Columbia. Amazing. Moorhead High in Moorhead MN (right across the river from Fargo, ND.) ------>The Spuds. You guessed it, a giant potato for a mascot. Get this, the colors used to be pink and brown, I kid you not! They have since replaced the pink, grey I think. Can you imagine the hockey team showing up at the Minnesota state tournament with pink trim on their sweaters?
I thought it was a flower, but maybe I'm thinking of something else. I love the name Joe Public. It sounds like it's the team of the common people. But I'm not sure how the martinis fit with that image. Strangers is a pretty good name, especially if they don't include a city name or something. It makes you wonder, "Where are these guys from?" "I don't know, they're complete Strangers." Hedonism is a good name, as long as the team plays an exciting attacking game. Eleven Men in Flight sounds like an abstract painting, so that's okay with me. Naughty Boys isn't so bad, it's just boring. Would be more interesting if it was the Naughty Schoolboys or, for a women's team, the Naughty Schoolgirls (woo hoo!). alansl
And two more: Poca (West Virginia) Dots Frankfort (Indiana) Hot Dogs In soccer: The Strongest (Bolivia) Always Ready (Bolivia) Joe Public's women's team is called Jane Public Another Trinidadian club is called W Connection
The Wizards played W Connection in one of the two Cup competitions they have been in recently... I can't remember if it was Copa Merconorte or the Champions Cup. And as I recall, there was more to the name then just "W Connection"
It's something like "Vibe 105 CT W Connection", where I believe the Vibe 105 CT is a radio station that sponsors the team. The "W Connection" comes from the fact that the team is owned by the Williams Brothers...it was originally known as Williams Connection.
Ridgefield, Washington: The Spudders. Blue and orange. Back in the bad old days of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the girls' teams were called the Sweet Potatoes.
Texas seems to be the king of odd high school names, I don't have them all, but here are some I remember: Crane HS: The Crane Golden Cranes Winters HS: The Winters Blizzards There is also a HS with the nickname "Ricebirds" somewhere in South Texas...anyone know who that is??
Texas can't hold a candle to Illinois for weird or bad HS team nicknames. My favorite: the Cobdon Appleknockers. In the bad old days, the Pekin Chinks.
Re: complaining about team names... Maybe if the Carolinas ever get an MLS team we could do a variation on that name... Carolina Good Ol' Boys.
Other unusual names: All Boys (Argentina) Argentinos Juniors (Argentina) Arabe Unido (Panama) - Arabs in Panama? Blooming (Bolivia) Comunicaciones (Guatemala) Doc's Khelwalaas (Trinidad & Tobago) Dragon (El Salvador) Jazz (Finland) Millonarios (Colombia) All of the Municipal (police) teams (Guatemala, Peru, etc) O'Higgins (Chile) - the other Emerald Isle? Santiago Morning (Chile) Violet Kickers (Jamaica) Xamax (Switzerland)
