that dude never heard of Croatia and doesn't speak Croatian, to me that's ridiculous :) Better to spend money to improve our shit league and youth system than traveling around world lookin for mercenaries.

my big soccer nickname didn't give me away?

I know but in my opinion players that play for national team should be bit more than people looking to help their career (of course that's not always the case specially nowadays, but it doesn't change my opinion)

I live by Washington DC but my whole family is still in Croatia so I can visit often and other way around. I speak Croatian but not everyone on here does so we keep it English.

Some players have picked harder way...they aren't onlu glory hunters...for example Ivan Rakitic, Joe Simunic, Mladen Petric...they could play in main role for Switzerland and Australia...but 2 of them would rather sit on the bench for Croatia, than play for Switzerland in main roles...

Some players like Daniel Bilos, or Dario Cvitanich...are two-faced players...they see national team as their push up...Bilos waited Argentina call...and they called them...only once or twice, and later never...:D he is now retired player in his 29, 30 age...Robert Kovac could play for Germany on high level...but he choosed Croatia..I dont see many defensive German players on high level...Metzelder...Mertesacker, Friedrich...Clemens...Huth....Tasci...before Ramellow...old Nowotny...for example Assou Ekotto choosed Cameroon because he couldnt get his position in France against Patrice Evra ...because of his fathers origins he choosed CAM...or Prince Boateng...he made a bad foul on Michael Ballack...and after he choosed Ghana...not Germany because German fans told him bad words through media and press...:)

Cvitanich is ridiculous- like BBBulldog said, he has never heard of Croatia and can't even locate it on a map. His great great great grandfather was from Brac or something...He shouldn't be allowed to playing. Playing for Croatia shouldn't be a career boost, we should be getting guys who actually feel Croatian and want to play for the team because of their identity. I give Eduardo a pass because he seems like a nice guy although I sometimes question his intentions. With that said, Eduardo hasn't had any real impact on the team because hes suffered from injuries. Too bad because hes the best (Croatian) finisher since Suker.

He heard about Croatia, but his priority was Argentina..."If Argentina calls me, i'll accept.."...

Wikipedia quote..:"Cvitanich was born in Argentina with distant Croatian heritage. He established himself as a quality footballer in his home country playing for Banfield in the Argentinian Primera División. After much consideration he eventually pledged to play for the Croatia national team, stating that "such an opportunity only comes once and you must take it". It became known on 14 January 2009 that he couldn't play for Croatia, because the FIFA rules do not allow nationality to be taken from the great grandfather."

So his great grandfather (pradjed) was born on island Brac...I have heard also that he has some Jewish heritage...

Great grandfather isnt so distant...for example footballers that have Jewish heritage could play for Israel even though they were born generations outside of Israeli borders...for example grandfathers of Cicinho and Camoranesi are from the same village in Italy...

Camoranesi commented in an interview in regards to the World Cup victory: "I feel Argentine but I have defended the colors of Italy, which is in my blood, with dignity. That is something nobody can take away."

This syndrom of "playing for the country of your ancestors" is now reality becaus eof migrations....World wars...economical and political movings...
I found a list of Argentine players that play for the country of their heritage...

I dont like the idea when some Nigerian, Brasilian or Argentnian player comes in some country, and than he applies for citizenship...after 4,5 years, or 2:D and than he becomes player in national swuad....for example Croatian player :D Eduardo da Silva doesn't know who is Count Josip Jelacic...

But I think its ok when for example Simunic, Klasnic, Kovac, Petric choose the country of their roots...because Croatia don't have home factory for forming new players....if we orient on the players who were born in Croatia...we have only Kranjcar, Vukojevic, Mandukic, Strinic, Runje...this is not type of quality that is enough for Top 10 teams on Fifa standards...it's not enough for entering on world cups, euros or champions league....

Dudu has Croatian citizenship, got married In Croatia came to country as kid, developed in Dinamo, speaks Croatian better than half our NT, and from anything I heard from guys that met him is nicest person you could meet :D Personally I'll take that over Cvitanovich anyday :D

Just like, personally, I'll take guy that bleeds for Dinamo over any local fancy boys that think they should get a special pass just cos they're from Zagreb :)

Same thing is with Sammir, Carlos, Etto...who also came at young age...and got citizenship..I think that national teams should orient on their football heritage...I understand the issue of migrations...but in 20, 30 years many countries could create same atmosphere like we saw in South Africa (French national team) where players choosed rather to strike than to defend their flag...country...the same we saw in England national team also in RSA...when Ashley Cole said after lost against Germany that "English people are so stupid" - he said that during taping some of players in bar, because English media and press critisized their attitude, way of playing...dilligence...etc..We saw problems with Mario Ballotelli, when FIGC (Italian Football Association) told: "There is no such thing as black Italians" That were members of FIGC, all businessmen, educated, well known..

Yeah they can. But you wouldn't wan't Jesic. He's poor.

Bozanic is good though, but he's Aussie through and through :D

Dugandzic is probably the best of the young Croat-Aussies in the A-League though. Skillful and really quick. Even played some football in Croatia for a couple of years.

Cvitanich scored 2 goals this weekend for Colo Colo. With Olic out for 6 months and Jelavic out for a long period, maybe we should consider him again. :D

I dont know really the quality of these players, I heard about some Culina, Skoko, Milicevic...Viduka, Mile Jedinak, Zdrilic... :D But like they say, more the merrier :D I see that some players have Herzegovina heritage...or Bosnia...most of our players com from that territory...Bosnia & Herzegovina is like Suriname for Netherlands
Australia is now good in football, its hard to expect, that every player with Croatian heritage comes in Croatia...and most of these players are 3rd generation....we should orient also on Argentina, Chile, USA, Canada, maybe Brasil, Europe, Australia, New Zealand...there we can find our players..
It's hard to adjust if they play in Australia...they must come to play in some European clubs...because English, Spanish, Italian league is the highest level in the world

I remember player Eddy Bosnar, he played for NK Rijeka

He would be good for Croatia...because he has Ajax school also...he played for Pachuca...he is a player on a good level...bad for Argentina, good for Croatia...it's hard toexpect that he becomes better against Tevez, Higuain, Aguero, Messi, Pastore...

But FIFA won't let him to play for Croatia, because his great grandfather was born in Croatia...and FIFA only told that at least grandfather must be born in Croatia...sounds silly to me...

For example Israeli players could play for Israel, even though their grandfathers were born in Poland, Ukraine, Russia, no connection with todays Israel state at all...Cvitanich could play if he marries Croatian girl, like Eduardo..or Etto..
What if someone from Austrian region that has many Croatians, and they live there 600 years...Gradisce, Burgenland...what if some player wanted to play for Croatia...for example Ivanschitz is very good player in Austrian team...

Croatia has many bad and suspicious choices now...I dont know why Bilic cant invite Rakitic, Ilicevic in 1 st squad...he forces only Kranjcar, Mandukic and Vukojevic...2 of them dont even play for Tottenham and Wolfsburg...

I agree with the other posters that guys like him shouldn't play. Since Croatia is a small country to begin with, I'm all for "expanding" our horizons, but once you start getting to great grandfathers, it gets ridiculous.

This is off-topic somewhat, but Bilic usually does the right thing for the team (if we can't beat Malta even with a 3rd string team, then we're in trouble). I've noticed on "other" message boards that Bilic seems to be souring on some National Team fans. Just like any coach, he'll make occasional tactical errors or perhaps should take other players, but once he leaves we are in big trouble since there is no one as good as him to take over.

Bilic was at the Hajduk/Zenit game on Thursday for the Europa Cup at Poljud. Trust me, there is no one there I'm sure that really blew him away from what I saw of the match, despite their late rally.

Its silly, I know...but we as a small country, with population of 4,7 billion people, can't provide high level of football with home players...even Italy, Spain, Germany, England, France with population between 60-80 billions must hire players from their colonies...or immigration community...if we hire only players that they were born in Croatia, we could never enter on World Cups, or Euros...because "Golden Generation" borns only once or twice...1998 was a epifany of talent, patriotism, devotion and luck...we dont have most of these characteristics...talent is questionable...same is with devotion and luck...Croatian children most of their time are surrounded with Play Station, xBox..or PC...playgrounds are almost empty...football conditions are so bad...from stadiums, toilletes, showers, health care...Croatia doesnt have even their Football Camp...they go in Slovenia for preparations...we still don't have reputation as a football force at UEFA or FIFA, because Croatia didn't won Euro Championship....2012.
We ignore youth teams...U-16, U-19, etc...For example Germany after bad result on EURO 2000, opened many camps for children, and invested plenty of money...before Germany didn't want to count on children of immigrants..and now we see Podolski, Klose...Ozil...Khedira...Gomez...Borowski, Marin...that have main role in Elf...all children of immigrants...we should call some of talented diaspora players under our flag...many of these players love Croatia..
I think that we need to find more players in Australia, Germany, Switzerland...so that we become bigger force in football...3rd place from France is past tense...distant time in history...we still live on these glorious days...we need to open new page in our football future...now we have great crisis and result famine...:D
It's time for new people in Croatian Football Association...I dont understand the term "headquarter" Bilic, Jurcevic, Asanovic, Mrmic etc..to many people..we need one leader, and sidekick..it becomes clear that Zlatko Kranjcar was better coach...because he won one point against England...and Bilic with better team won only laughs against Capello...4-1 and 5-1 loses wasn't good play..main role in Croatian football have managers that push their players..."he must play, because he said so" - that's the usual sentence...we lost U-21 generation...Deranja, Carevic, Ljubojevic, Jese...and that team U-21 that wo against Serbia 6-2...lack of vision if you ask me...:)

even without diaspora players croatia would still put on a pretty strong team..modric kranjcar srna pranjic strinic olic vukojevic..then you have the herceg-bosno hrvati who some consider diaspora but they really arent as bosna hercegovina was once croatia and most of the croats form there will always consider themselves hrvati..from there you have mandzukic corluka lovren petric born in bosna but moved to swiss at young age..thats still a very strong team if you ask me..then you have good young talents like perisic badelj vrsajlko kalinic jajalo vida..sure its nice to have diaspora but its not a necessity for our football..i have been very impressed btw eith ilicevic who was born in germany but has cro parents..kid has speed and dribbling skills something the national team really doesnt have..

These home educated players aren't world great class...they don't have dillgence...they don't have constant shape...Petric is best player of October in Bundes liga...Mandukic as same profile like Petric played maybe 1 hour for Wolfsburg...:) Kranjcar, Corluka, Pletikosa are on the bench most of the time...Diaspora players play a lot...Rakitic..Simunic..Petric..Klasnic...they have different mentality..Strinic isn't material for European clubs on higher level..just like he isn't good for national team...

I dont think that Croats from Bosnia and Herzegowina are diaspora people...it's a matter od changing the history...issue of lines between countries...like Switzerland...Belgium...Luxembourg...Silesia...

In France they consider Lovren very bad player...against Benfica he did some big errors..and Lyon received 4 goals..and Lovren scored one goal...it's silly when press&media say that defender scored one goal...and everyone forgets that he was guilty for receving 4 goals..and the rest of defence also...

Ilicevic is the reflection between home educated players and diaspora...Home educated players don't have speed...jump...playing with the head..

Modric can't even shoot on the goal from 15 meters distance...Kranjcar don't have speed...defense game also bad...technical talent zero..he only has shot...

If you observe...Rakitic...Petric...brothers Kovac...Ilicevic...Klasnic...Simunic...you can see that theyhave greater motivation...sacrifice...they are complete players...Croatian players leave HNL league at very young age...20, Vrsaljko 18 or 19...and they lose themselves in Europe...just like Balaban..Sokota...Biscan...Silvio Maric...Kranjcar...Neretljak...Babic...Krpan...Vugrinec...Pletikosa...Mikic...Deranja...Mandzukic...Veic...they all return soon in Croatia...because they couldn't follow the rythm of european games...nobody from diaspora didn't came in HNL league because of his lack of talent...

make no mistake about it modric is by far our best player..he cant shoot from distance but the rest of his game is top class..modric has been in very good form lately for spurs..modric dominated the midfield against inter..kranjcar was very good last year for spurs but hasnt really gotten the playing time since vander vart came..he needs to find a new club..kranjcar was also the best player on the field against israel..how can u say kranjcar has no technical talent? he may be slow and not good defensively but technically he is a good player..lovren has had some bad games but also good games..he was voted man of the match in lyons last home game..if you read the lyon forum he is very highly rated by there fans just needs some more experience..vrsajlko is a big time talent..most talented fullback ive seen since jarni..vrsajlko loves to train and has a very good head on his shoulders..he will make it where ever he goes in europe..rakitic i think has been a dissappointment for all the hype he has recieved..hnl is a terrible league i know but it still produces some good talent..under 21 has a couple of diaspora players that ladic called up..i cant remember there names but ill find out and tell you later..i forgot about jelavic as well..was performing very well for rangers before he got hurt..i remember when i saw him in hajduk at a very young age and he looked like a smotan on the field..he has really improved since he left hnl..jelavic reminds me a little bit of prso as he plays with alot of heart but is stronger in the air then prso..mandzukic hasnt gotten playing time as graffite and dzeko are ahead of him..once wolfsburg sell dzeko mandzukic will get his chance to prove himself..
