Football in the Andes in Churubamba, Peru

    Proving that football can go everywhere, there's been the Kilimanjaro match, and the talented player Sunakali Budha from a remote Himalayan village in Nepal. In Peru, women's football became a tradition in Churubamba, as reported by Trans World Sport in the Andean mountain village in 2013.



    The first fame for the Quechua players in Cusco region was in an article, "Las campeonas de los Andes", EL PAÍS, 2006 (Archive), also telling of the (sometimes tragic) reasons for how soccer became their pastime. The Churubamba team won their region's championship game against the town of Urcos, quite a different place, seen in an Arte TV documentary:
