In Albuquerque we had both dinner and breakfast at the Frontier. Cheap and tasty and my travelling companion could ogle all the college girls. My favorite places in NM so far have been Albuquerque and Taos. Santa Fe was okay but a little too pretentious.
the real chili rivalry is what you eat with it. down south (at least where i'm from - which is in florida and is most definitely "southern") you eat it with corn bread. up here in ohio, they eat peanut butter sandwiches with it. what the hell is that all about? you don't have enough protein IN the chili? oh, and tea ain't good unless it has so much sugar it makes your teeth hurt.
I think the best meal I had there was at the power plant cafeteria, and that was a bag of chips and a snickers out of a vending machine.
Actually, whatever it is I had at the VI was fine, for whatever it was, which I can't recall at the moment. Probably a BLT or maybe a club sandwich. Right now I'm in Vegas. So far we've eaten really good prime rib at an extremely off-strip casino, a passable breakfast at The Orleans and a yummy dinner at Fatburger. I had hot dogs - one plain and one chile and my travelling companion had a burger and fries. I loved my dinner but he was underwhelmed so we're gonna try a Fatburger in L.A. Tomorrow we'll probably go to a buffet somewhere.
Hey if you are coming to L.A., I have a couple of Hamburger suggestions: 1) The Apple Pan in West Los Angeles....old school Counter Only place, thick burgers with slightly sweet relish & the 8 Inch Tall Slices of fresh baked applie pie that is the best we have in L.A. 2) Howard's also in West Los Angeles.....microspic hamburger join in a run down mini mall run by a big German woman and her diminuitive husband (its always funny to see her bosing him around in German)....austere but very clean environment....I recommend a double patty burger stacked high with a fried egg, bacon, avocado, cheese & chili (split it with your companion...otherwise you will die on the spot) 3) Dino's in East Los Angeles....one of many Greek run Burger Joints in the Inner City. Go to the Dino's on the corner of Main Street & Griffin Avenues in the Lincoln Height neighborhood (a couple of blocks from General Hospital....as in the Sopa Opera, General Hospital)...just east of Chinatown & Downtown. Dino's makes great grilled, heavily seasoned, burgers and the Chili Fries are to die for (an order can usually feed a small army). 4) Tommy's in Silver Lake (a couple of blocks from Dodger Stadium)...legendary joint that once was a Drive In...now its configured with an Outdoor Condiments counter...that helps them deal with the tons of hungry (usually sad & in need of comfort) Dodgers fans after games. L.A. has a couple of decent Mexican places as well....let me know you want some tips.
Philly cheese steaks in Philly v. everywhere else. Heck, there's even a rivalry in Philadelphia between Gino's and a place across the street. Tasty Kakes v. Little Debbie (or whoever)
whenever we visit jersey we have to bring back tasty cakes for certain relatives. i've had them. i still think little debbie is better. and hostess.
Exactly. That's why, when I was living in Orlando, all of the Southern ex-pats would say, "You've got to drive north to get South."
Thats logical given that Orlando's latitude is south enough to be considered part of Latin America....no?
Oh, the Puerto Rican and Cuban stuff fit in just fine, it's all the Noo Yawkahs that have robbed Central/South Florida of its Southerness.
Okay, we're in San Deigo and will be for the next few days (we want to go to the zoo but not on the weekend.) We won't be in L.A. for very long at all. Probably just the time it takes to go to the Watts Towers and then leave town. Anyway, back on topic, I remembered the best donuts I've ever had - at Tim Horton's! I can't believe I forgot about them earlier.
Thanks, but we really didn't go anywhere interesting at all. Neither of us was feeling very good. But I've definitely noted this for the next time.
As a Washington Capitals fan I always wondered what Tim Horton's was (as they're from Canada and advertise a lot at Canadian team arenas) so one day I looked them up. The chain was founded by Tim Horton, a former Maple Leafs defenseman (he played at some other teams near the end of his career). According to his bio he was killed in a car crash in 1974: http://www.timhortons.com/en/about/aboutus_bios.html Looks like they came "South" in 1995 when they merged with Wendy's and open some stores in NE and the midwest. In 2004 they bought out the Bess Eaton chain in RI, MA and CT (no great loss there, BE was yucky!) I'll have to give them a try the next time I visit the family in RI. K
Do it. You won't regret it. Also, for some reason they are in Ohio, too. There's one in downtown Columbus, in case you get there on a DCU roadtrip before you get to RI.
I got some KK last night, and I must say that the plain KK donut isn't so hot, eventhough I like their total donut production as a whole better than that of DD. KK makes a mean kruller, a great sour cream donut (sounds gross, isn't) and I like a lot of their fruit filled ones.
Ohio makes sense as that's the HQ for Wendy's. I hope I get back to RI before another trip to Columbus, been there way to many times. K
little debbie, hands down - not only do they taste better and have more varieties, but they cost 1/3 as much my favorites:
