I remember he good old days when you just hired somebody out of the Dutch system, few questions asked. (Please, no Thomas Rongen remarks, (although he does have the second highest winning percentage among all DCU coaches).
Yeeeeeeah that's what got me hyped earlier today i just failed to quote the whole tweet chain in proper context. Getting him involved with DC would honestly make me cry tears of joy...give him all the keys (Technical Director, Manager etc)
If he isn't one of the top considered candidates I would question the seriousness of the search. He's easily higher on the list than Kreis.
I’d still take (a younger) Rongen. He came in when the league was dismantling the team. Plus nagging injuries to key players, and a few good other teams catching up.
From overseas, former #usmnt defender Steve Cherundolo has taken interest in returning stateside the past year. Former Hannover capt, youth coach and 1st-team asst, Stuttgart asst, UEFA Pro license, German U-15 natl team asst.— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) October 13, 2020
Ideally, the ownership should be looking for a clean sweep: GM; Head Coach; Asst. Coach. We need to bring in a complete new team at the top.
If we're digging into assistants, how about Aleko Eskandarian? He was an assistant to the Cosmos for several of their championships and coached their B side to one in 2015 (NPSL). https://www.nycosmos.com/news/2020/04/29/2015-cosmos-b-named-to-npsl-all-time-top-10-teams
US-U15 Coach, El Salvador Assistant, El Tri US Scout - relationships all over the US in latino communities. Ties to the Salvadoran communities. Essentially - Top level youth coaching experience (National Team), International Assistant Coach, and Talent Scout specializing in the type of talent not recognized by the USSF youth systems. Good with youth, assistant to a senior team. eye for young talent and trust of a federation to find it.
Yeah I don't remember him as a player or U-15 coach but what I do know is after Klinsmann was fired I viewed his firing as a turning point I think he was one of the assistants for the senior MNT and the results before and after his departure are drastic. Later as he's been interviewed about scouting and player development i came to find his outlook and passion for the game really attractive https://www.socceramerica.com/publi...ez-on-style-of-play-the-usa-has-the-play.html Also, I love the fact that his role with El Tri had him building relationships with scouts across the country. That foundation could prove incredibly useful for finding under the radar talent for cheap
My top candidates, in terms of track record and potential interest in the position: 1) Dominic Kinnear. He's got to be the assistant with the best pedigree of anyone in MLS. Coached for 12 years in MLS. Current assistant for the Galaxy. No connections to DC, so question is if he wants to move East. Might be holding out for an opening in LA or West Coast. 2) Pablo Mastroeni - Did a very good job with the Rapids a few years ago, now assistant with the Dyanamo. Knows league inside and out. Assuming he speaks Spanish, that's another plus. 3) Jason Kreis - Obvious candidate if he's interested. Not sure if he wants to miss out on Olympics though. 4) Preki - Current assistant in Seattle. Former MLS coach of the year, but like 10 years ago. 5) Ante Razov (assistant in LA). Very unlikely to leave LA, but if he wanted to, he'd be a great pick-up. Assume he has learned a lot under Bob Bradley. 6) David Wagner. Don't think he wants to leave Europe yet, and probably doesn't know MLS player pool at all. 7) Pat Noonan - Current assistant for a very good Philly team. Has also been assistant under Arena for a few years. 8) Kerry Zavagnin - Assistant under Vermes in KC for 11 years now. Is he ready to make the jump? 9) Landon Donovan - Wildcard...but it would be fun to watch. 10) Jermaine Jones - Was getting his coaching badges I heard. Would be a real inspiration on the sideline. +++++++++++++++++++ Others to consider: Chris Armas - a lot has already been said, but he's a good candidate. Mike Petke - Former RSL head coach. A bit of a hothead (like Olsen). Had good seasons with the Red Bulls, and knows the league inside and out. Conor Casey - Did a decent job leading Colorado under an interim tag a few years ago. USMNT experience. No connections to DC, but an intriguing option. Steve Ralston. Potential assistants: I'd hire Cherundolo as an assistant, but don't think he's ready for a head coaching position in MLS year. Not sure how familiar he is with the player pool. Who I Don't Want: 1) John Harkes - Has done nothing at the coaching level to show he deserves this job. 2) Eric Wynalda - Meh. 3) John Hackworth - Didn't do a great job in Philly.
Dom Kinnear has experience but I'm not certain he can be successful in todays' MLS... Liked Preki as a player but not interested in seeing him as head coach for my club... I hated Pat Noonan as a player and have no idea how he'll do at the helm but the residual hate hasn't washed off... Bottom line, aside from likeability, I don't think they're the best candidates for the job. Same feeling about Ellis and several others. I bracing myself though cause the odds of DC choosing someone average are pretty high
https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020...didates-contention-dc-united-coaching-vacancy Not sure if this has already been posted.
John Harkes has done nothing at the coaching level to show he deserves to coach DC United but Landon Donovan and Jermaine Jones have? LOL.
What continues to surprise me is that a two time failure like Jason Kreis still gets serious consideration and some folks think he's a good coach. He won a Cup 12 seasons ago in a different MLS and had Lagerway as his GM. Some of the others on Keller's list are laughable -- Kinnear? Why not just bring back Tommy Soehn and save yourself some money.
Fair point, but I'd consider Landon as an assistant if he were interested. Would love having his vision and knowledge on the sideline.
