Good move, it will keep Toronto from getting him. https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020/12/02/report-ben-olsen-mix-toronto-fc-head-coach-job Thx, Jay!
Why would he come here? Possibly a MLS team with substantial cash reserves like NYCFC, Atlanta United, Inter Miami, Austin FC, Chicago Fire, Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders, LAFC, LA Galaxy, Sporting KC,, or New York Red Bulls. But, why would he want to come to the Sheffield United of MLS?
i dont think he will come...but i would like it if mls started getting high profile coaches. tuchel does burn a lot of bridges too...so maybe he would end up wanting to come to fresh turf.
So why not weigh in on someone like Miguel Herrera (whos been approached and written about on MLS’s website), or Gabby Heinze (who actually is coming here)? Thx, Jay.
Someday perhaps, but from Mainz to Dortmund to PSG, his career arch is not quite to MLS yet. He's still got bridges to burn in England, Spain and Italy before MLS.
I agree. But, since Arsene Wnger’s career path took him from Japan to France to the Premiership, MLS could be a launching pad for a very young manager who has the ambition to coach at the highest levels.
I was referring Tuchel, specifically. I think MLS is a league whose entertainment value and overall quality of play & competition compares favorably to pretty much all the leagues in the Americas, save for perhaps Mexico and the elite teams of Brazil and Argentina.
With those postulating that a coach hasn't been hired because the team doesn't think they'll be playing on time or playing at all because of labor unrest. Its almost certain that stadiums will be closed or heavily reduced capacity, this article has DCU at 48% of its revenue from the gate. I assume they're mentioned because they're the high watermark in the league.
According to Maurer's Twitter feed, Olsen indeed has had multiple talks with Toronto and has been "contacted" by Sheffield Wednesday, but no talks yet.
Olsen probably interviews well. He can talk about culture, team work, mutual support and atmosphere of the locker room. His record indicates that with mediocre talent, he gets mediocre results. With good talent, he gets good results. Only a very few coaches can elevate so-so talent above its level consistently. Bradley had a great squad initially in Toronto, but didn't get the highest results he should have. But at LAFC, he's shown that with talent, he can succeed. Olsen could do well, and maybe keep Sheffield Wed out of relegation from Division Two
Goff says today they're still looking and talking to people. They're up to 20 potential coaches talked to now.
Well, don't read Goff's update today. You'll want to go full Jeffrey Epstein after reading it. Spoiler alert: they're lowballing the offers to prospective coaches.
Ben is under contract through 2021, so unless he finds another coaching job he probably will be somewhere in the front office hierarchy, which will make at least the first year of a new coach's tenure excruciating. (cf. the 1960 film "tunes of Glory" with Alec Guinness for just how excruciating such a situation can be).
Wouldn't they go for a domestic coach if they're trying to lowball the offers? Me thinks they're trying to go all exotic. (according to Pablo? Goff? Ashton isn't no longer in the consideration)
The problem is anyone domestic knows the true nature of the FO. Not many want to knowingly enter a bad situation while getting paid pennies.
