I use my external HD to store movies and music that I transfer from my PC's HD. I used to be able to transfer these files in a matter of minutes depending on the size but in the past week or so the time it takes has gone up to hours.

Wondering if anyone could help me find the reason for this and solve the problem?

Look. This isn't fair to Toon3. Here he's got this big file transfer problem, and you and I are doing Monty Bleedin' Python. I bet he didn't expect The Spanish Inquisition.

    To which you say...;)

Are the discs fragmented? (Both computer and removable.) What is the connection method? USB? Firewire? Have you hung any new devices off of that bus recently?

I've defragged both drives in the last month and the connection is USB. I've not added anything new.

Anyone with any idea why this has suddenly happened? It's becoming infuriating waiting several hours for a file to copy that just last month was done in a matter of minutes.

    Honestly, I don't have a clue . . . .

Have you tried using a different/new USB cable?

No new security programs or settings that may be scanning the files before/during the transfer?

I've tried different USB cables in different USB ports and disabled all security programs.

The tech guys at work have no idea why it's happened either.

Have you tried a different external HD? If you can beg, borrow, or steal one, swap drives and see if the transfer rate improves on another external HD. At least this would rule in/out a hardware problem with the external drive.
