Nope it was a different song. They were singing inside a bus.

Yeah that was classy from Messi. It has to do with his good friendship with Neymar. Neymar wished him congratulations in social media and I am sure also in private. Neymar probably would have done the same although AFAIK our players don't celebrate titles with songs that involves the rivalry (even in the locker room as far as I've seen). In the past they just bring instruments and sing Brazilian samba / pagode songs. But one of the reasons could be that we really don't have many fan chants that involve Argentina much. Although that may be changing now as these Argentinean songs are gaining so much recognition.

Not only past players but a lot of people in the media and even regular Brazilian people are happy for Messi. I think we all know he deserved it.

Here you go. I honestly don't care how they celebrate. Many of the Argentinean chants are really well written. Just saying that it wasn't a completely gratuitous poke / comment from Neymar. And knowing his personality, he is just messing around returning some banter.

Ah, I see. Well, I don’t like any celebrations that degrade anyone.

Well I have one pretty big exception to that general rule, Samuel said it best:

I don't have a problem with the bisht, but the timing of it did ruin the visual of the trophy lift. Soccer is a team sport, after all, and seeing Messi dressed differently than his teammates disrupted that all-important moment.

It's not even a first for a host country to bestow culturally symbolic garb on the winning team's MVP. Here's Pelé in 1970 rocking a sobrero in the Azteca after winning the cup:

...But seeing as Qatar was using this tournament to sportswash its reputation globally, putting the bisht on Messi unexpectedly when he did also seemed like Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani was lording over the whole event once again.

no, i actually agree with you. it should have been done a lot better. they could have done it at the start of the game and given them to all the finalists, not just to messi right before the most important photo op of the tournament. the idea was fine, the execution was cringy.

Pretty amazing depiction of just how hard it is to win the world cup, here's how the #1 ranked (by FIFA) team has done since 1994:

(not saying it is easy to win, but) the actual favorites at the start of the tournament ended up winning in both 2010 and 2014. France might have also been favorites in 2018 but not sure.

Edit, Just checked. France weren't the pre-tournament favorites in 2018. Though the top 3 (Germany, Brazil and France) were all very close in terms of their odds when the draw was made. Some bookies even had Spain in there ahead of France right before the tournament started (though they were a fairly distant #4 six months prior - not sure what happened from Dec 2017 to Jun 2018 to make people think Spain were as good as France & Brazil ).

Heavy is the head that wears the crown...

Interesting though that Brazil haven't done the group-stage collapse thing like their European counterparts have.

Yeah. We've made every QF after 1990. But too many QF exits after 2002.

Never even been close to being knocked out at group stage.

I'd bet that Argentina would have reignited the champions group stage curse in 2026 if not for the expanded 32-team knockout doemat.

Is the stadium in the bottom-right photo really 80% empty or does it just look that way? smh if so.

Probably photoshopped background to remove Lautaro out of the picture photo bombing. There is some weird shit happening with Messi's hand holding the trophy too.

On an unrelated note, has anybody noticed that the WC trophy is a whole lot shinier than it used to be ? Specially the globe.

That is THEE World Cup trophy, the one made of 18 karat gold.
FIFA only brings it out during the award ceremony after the World Cup final has been played.
Once in the dressing rooms, at some point FIFA takes back that trophy and replace it with a gold plated trophy that the winners get to keep permanently.
Apart from the awards ceremony, FIFA always holds on to the 18 karat trophy.
I believe there are two other trophies used for touring and promoting the tournament but those are also gold plated.
